3rd Gen to 4th Gen… was it worth it?

3rd Gen will likely go down in history as one of the best Tacoma's. Time will tell. This is why there were record numbers sold. There are a small amount of loud whiners that complain about the silliest things. 3rd Gen is a solid rig that is tough to beat as far as mid-size trucks go. 4th Gen likely to be a good truck, however, there are questions regarding reliability, price and resale that will need to be answered. Only time will tell.

 

Every time, If I let it warm up for 5 min it’s fine

 

3rd gen will go down in history as the worst auto transmission ever put in a Toyota. Not a bad truck but damn the transmission is terrible

 

3rd gen absolutely will not go down as the best truck of anything. I can’t believe I lived with driving 3rd gen’s since 2017. I wouldn’t go back to one of those truck ever.

 

I'm amazed at how well the commercial side adapted from Tacos to Mavericks. I have never drove a Maverick, but it probably drives like a CUV, or any other FWD car.

I kind of want a Maverick to tool around, and at the sub $30k price point makes it more attractive. I also like the 4G XtraCab, but that's about $10k more.

 

I wouldn’t say it got worse over time. The issue with mine was shifting hard when descending a grade when in the lower gears. It was too harsh. The truck couldn’t figure out which gear was appropriate. I loved the linear speed improvement once my truck was tuned, and the truck did shift more smoothly when accelerating.

 

That doesn't sound normal especially on a brand new truck. Maybe your transmission fluid is low?

 

A lot of people are saying their trucks are doing the same thing. I think it’s a software thing. If you warm the truck up for 2 min it shifts perfect. Mind you it’s only the first shift after starting the truck after it sits over night. Some people claim it goes away as the truck learns

 

If warmup is required, it isn’t software.

 

Wish toyota (and other manufacturers) went back to the transmission dipstick. I can't remember which vehicle it was (I believe a dodge or ram pickup) but i saw that it didn't even have an oil dipstick.

More reason to have to go to the stealerships I guess.

 

Who knows, it could be . Trans temp and shift points or timing could be related. The 2016 tacoma has a tsb early on for a hard 1-2 shift. It was a software update

 

So you are saying I would have to warm up a 4th gen for 5 minutes before driving to get it to shift properly? That is a problem.

 

But you drove one for six years when there were plenty of other options out there

When I say hard shift I mean you feel the shift a bit more then other shifts it’s hardly a issue, I’ll take the hard shift over the garbage shifting up and down and lugging of the 3rd gen, along with all its other annoying quirks like rough idling feeling like your sitting in a massage chair, driveline vibrations you name it

 

I have the same issue on a '23 Camry as well with an 8 speed variant. Seems to be a characteristic of modern Toyota's.

Um no, love the 4th gen not even remotely close the same truck

 

Yeup. First stop on my route to work (1 mile) it usually does it. After that it's fine. Like I said before it did one time freak out and SLAM into a gear after already warm. Hasn't happened again.
