I own both a 3rd gen sport with a manual and a 4th gen SR with a manual and have never complained about getting into 1st on the 3rd gen. the amount of times i need to wiggle back and forth between 2nd and 1st to get it into 1st on the 4th gen is quite annoying. but so far with ~1000 miles on it no issues with 2/4/6

Can't say as to why but my 3rd gen has blocked me out of 1st many many times. Letting out the clutch in N and trying again always fixes it. This is the only truck I've ever owned that did this and I have seen many other 3rd gen owners report the same. If the 4th gen is worse about it, then that sucks. I do feel like the 3G has done it less often as time has gone on, but I'm at 53K and it still does it often enough to remind me that it's still a thing.

My assumption is that this is a process issue. If you compare the housings in the pictures I posted, the first two are Hilux housings and the third is 2024 Tacoma. You can see a much larger separation/witness line on the Tacoma housing. That may or may not mean much, but with the part number staying the same, it seems unlikely that a design change was made, but rather that a process concern was corrected so the original design will function as intended.

The production date of the VIN in question is June 6, 2024. There's a good chance the number of 2024 Tacoma 6MTs post-change is few to none at this point.

That's the date I drove off the lot. It was produced in May, so I wasn't far. Close only counts with horseshoes and grenades.

Thanks for posting this. This is good news to some extent.

The concern now for me is how prevalent this will be and when and where I'll be when this fails. Hopefully not during bumper to bumper on the highway before traffic opens up but you can imagine that'd be fun and safe.

On another note, is shifting from 1st to 3rd possible/reliable in the event of an emergency to get off the road? This is my first MT so just trying to have a bit of an SOP for if and when this breaks.

No problem. Just need to rev a little higher in 1st before going to 3rd, same to 5th.

Yeah, you can easily use 1-3-5 instead, just need to rev a bit higher.

Looks like I'll need to let my teenager drive the truck more so I can get it replaced under 60/60,000. If there's a way to break it, he'll find it.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
It has also done that to me occasionally on my '22. I don't remember when was the last time it has done that to me, but I want to say it happened more often during the beginning (I bought my truck brand new). I do the same thing; throw it in N and release the clutch, then try again. I'm approaching 36k miles right now.

It's a minor annoyance to me as long as it won't lead to a failure.

My old 2006 Honda S2000 has done that before, but I can count with my hands how many times it has done that. And that car's mileage isn't low.

My probably wrong assessment would be that the casting was a bit off, either too hot or too cold, and the mold making the parts was off spec temp wise. Combined this makes it weaker around the joint.

I go ask question about your 3rd gen 6spd manual transmission blocking you out, did you change gear oil? Have to be GL-4, SAE75w-90 gear oil?

I’ve changed that a bunch of times. I don’t use 75W-90 but always GL4. The fluid is fine.

I would suspect so, both our VINs start with 3TYLE5JN (well I assume yours too) because they are the same make, model, year and plant as the US counterparts.

It will likely be released for Canada as well, if there are affected vehicles in Canada. It usually takes an extra few weeks or months to release in Canada, I think because of French translation and other approvals, etc.

This is normal behavior for manuals. Sometimes the gear teeth don’t line up perfectly in 1st. I’ve driven many different manuals including Medium Duty truck Spicers and heavy Duty Eaton Fuller 10 speeds and they all do this. Just go to second and back to first quick and all good. Unless you experience this every single time you shift to 1st then maybe your clutch not disengaging properly.

Good to know. But I driven manual transmission in my personal trucks all my life. If I get problems getting into gear, I don’t slam lever into gear, not like some people. The manual transmissions you described, are for semi trucks. There are no syncrosmesh gears, have shift gears certain way.
