Hard to figure this out with a short video, but sounds like it might be a rod knock.

sounds like timing chain rattle or could just be a cracked heat shield

The noise is intermittent and it stops after warming up, before i took it apart i got a check engine light for cam position sensor and the traction light came on. I did research and found thats a recall for v6 but not common for 4cyl. The truck ran with the light on. I bought a bunch of parts like sensors, timing chain/guilds, fazer and everything in between so Ill let you guys know if it fixes the problem

Any updates? Mine does this in the winter for the first 10 seconds before slowly going away. Noticed today there is a rattling noise almost like the chain has stretched. But I’ve been doing 5k oil changes since day one, I’m the original owner btw so I’ve been doubtful of that

Yea i replaced the fazers and timing chain and i timed it wrong by one tooth and would make a really bad noise i brought to the dealer and said the timing was off so i took it apart and pay for DIY All data and got all the timing marks and re-did everything. Its been like 3 days since and no noise so far but long story short the noise in the video is from the Cam Fazers

Sounds like the classic toyota VVT-i cam gear rattle. Usually happens at cold start and goes away once warmed up.

Usually from clogged oil path somewhere in the VVTi cam gears

My 2.7L does this occasionally at startup....no rhyme or reason for when it does or doesn't... VVT-i cam gear?

I'm trying to figure out what to tell my mechanic, because I'm not going to DIY it and I'm not going to take it to Toyota. I'll wing it I guess....

Would running some seafoam in the crank case help clean out the vvti oil pathways?

I have this issue on cold start and really don't feel like ripping into the upper half of the motor if I can somehow "clean it".

I would imagine that I could drive it like this for the next 15 years without an issue, but I've taken care of this truck from mile 1 and it's annoying to have any kind of issues especially in the "bullet proof" 4cyl

I fixed mine by using LiquiMoly Pro-Line Engine Flush. I've used it twice in the past 2 years and it keeps it from making that noise. Fixed it.

Thanks for this response... I'm assuming your running the 4cyl... If you have any details you can provide, Id appreciate it. I'm at 75k now on my 4cyl 2020 and although I'm not opposed to doing work, I would rather not crack open the valve cover at such low mileage if I don't have to.

I've had this truck from new and maintained it, changed oil every 5k and although I don't baby it I certainly don't beat it. This just started last week when the temps dropped into the 40s and I'm trying to keep this truck for a long time.

This sounds like something I would try first.

Yes, 2TR-FE (2005) w/ 5M and 240k. Around 225k it started doing this 'chain slap' sound at startup, sometimes when cold, sometimes when warm. Sounds terrible and mechanic said it's time to replace the chain & guides $4k.

I got the LiquiMoly Pro-Line Engine Flush ($18) and dumped it in the existing dirty oil:

    - Run it at idle for 20 minutes & drain.
    - Fresh oil filter & oil; run that at idle for about 30 minutes & drain.
    - Fresh 0W20 (Mine uses 0W30) and a fresh filter and it SHOULD be good-to-go.
