I'd like to see you bench press mine into place. Like I'm not even sure that you can't do it I just don't want to do it and would rather see someone else get it done so I don't have to

I can muscle them far enough but don't have the control to then to align it and bash it into place as often as the case with the sleeve catching in the mount itself.tge top is threaded at least so I'll work on it a different night. This is the easy side, the drivers side is going to suuuuck. I just hope the floor jack doesn't get stolen out of the back of my truck before then, I also need to do the 5 tire rotation... Nuts are 21 or 22 mm and of course I didn't have that. It sucks not having a full toolbox 5ft away....

Literally no access to the top bolt. Gas tanks, fuel lines, all in the way. So it'll be a lot of cursing laying on the hot pavement to get that done.

Hopefully it's worth it... Miss having a garage so much. Like little things are annoying. No place to wrench. Doing oil changes is a pain. No access to a spicket to fill my water tank. But those are small things compared to the benefits I've found with my apt life now.

I only have like half a garage and it's awesome haha missed it so much. Ready for the full on shop. Not that I can ever afford that in this economy unless I get a huge raise.

Got out into the alley at 5:10 this morning and banged out both leaf springs. Hopefully once the truck is loaded up, it'll be perfect. I do hate getting the rear axle aligned when everything is going back together. Ratchet straps always work and only take a few minutes, but man, it sucks.

Yeah, they want to send them again, but only have 5-day FedEx, so no install before I leave. I told them to hold them until it'll be a early-Aug, which is the first time I'll be in town. Bummer. But really, first world problems.

Edit: by send again, I mean, "send to the right place." Because they sent them before, but not to me, ha!

Edit 2: weird, pic didn't show up for leaf springs. Re-added. I did notice that some of the little plastic spacer pads were getting pretty mangled already.

I never have had issues with that or maybe thats due to the new leafs? I find if you jack it up just to apply a bit of pressure on the leafs you can then just push/pull the wheel hub to get the center pins in and then you jack it up the rest of the way to get some weight on the axle. Then do the U bolts.

Maybe has to do with not being on a flat surface? For me, as the truck settles, the center pin is off by a couple inches (this has always been the case). With the other side on the ground (I do one side at a time), there's a lot of friction to pulling the axle forward. Way more than push/pull, hence the straps.

OK, leaf spring question, since I'm not totally happy with the situation now. (lots of taco lean, which was something Zane and I noticed at his place, but went away when I added the 5th leaf).

I always do one side at a time - to help keep the rear axle in position, and for safety. However, I'd like to swap side with the leaf packs, which obviously means taking both out at the same time. Seems like the way to so that is:

    1. Support frame in front of front hangers on stands.
    2. Remove wheels
    3. Floor jack under rear diff to lower axle to release spring tension on both sides; then, support axle on each side with small stand or wood or something.
    4. Remove leafs
    5. Swap and reinstall.

    Questions:
    1. I've got my bed, tent, and rack on the back. OK to support the frame in front of the hangers or is it too dangerous?
    2. How to keep the rear axle "mostly" in place? Ratchet straps to the sliders perhaps, and maybe a jack stand under the driveshaft so it doesn't rotate down/separate?
    3. Am I crazy?

Ah I always just have the jack under the diff and lift the whole axle that way. Only annoying thing that can happen is if it rolls forward to far and the slip yoke comes apart.

I've never done it on side at a time, that would be a total PITA.

Thats basically how I do it.

I just leave the jack under the diff to support the axle and usually use a block of tall wood of some kind to hit the pinion to keep it from rolling forward and hold it up so the slip yoke doesn't come apart.

I think I've done it with the rack on before. But if you're nervous and dont have flat ground then I'd take the tent off. Can't hurt.

But doing it this way is way faster and easier. At one point I was able to drop the axle and pull leafs/add them and reassemble in about 1.5 hours back in the day when I was working in the big shop.

^ agreed, take both sides apart at the same time makes it easier to get them lined back up. Leaving the jack under the diff allows the axle to pivot easily to line up center pins, and if you’re just adding/removing leaves you don’t even have to take the pack off the truck this way.

@turbodb I have a set of 10T frame stands that I support the frame just behind the shackles with, especially with the GFC and bed full of stuff, etc. You’re welcome to borrow them if you’d like.

Jamming a pry bar in the rear shackles makes for easy maneuvering of the leaf forward to line up the front leaf bolts and axle pins. Just something I found doing it a couple weeks ago

Thanks. I'll probably give it a go tomorrow morning. At least, I'll check the balance of the truck with the jack stands forward of the hangers; I think some 6T's back there are more than enough to not crumble, I just wasn't sure about the leverage/tippiness with the bed and tent on. Taking the tent off is an ordeal since I'm working alone at 5am, hahaha.

Also, got the rear locker fixed, so that's nice.

Monte - any trails I'm going to want the mid-skid installed for, or are we skipping those this time?

I mean I won't have a mid skid. Barely have skids haha ripped off the back of one last weekend and put a hole in it.

And honestly I don't know. I highly doubt it but going into unknown areas with limited information. I'm pretty confident you won't miss it.
