Is anyone running a 285/70-16 tire?

I am going to need new tires soon, and I want to go a little bigger since I'm putting my 5100s on this weekend, and I have new rims with 4.5" bs coming in next week. I was originally going to go with a 285/75-16 because I wanted the increased width, but I can't afford the drop in mpgs going to a 33". I did some research and discovered that a 285/70-16 does exist, it's about the same diameter(32") as a 265/75-16 which seems to be the most popular size on this forum, just a little wider. So my question is, is anyone out there running a 285/70-16. If so can you tell me what kind, some feedback on them, your opinions of them? Pics are also greatly appreciated! Thank you.

And before you ask, I did use the search function...for the past three days!

 

If you're worried about the gas mileage, go with 265/75/16's

Tires in those weird sizes tend to be a little more expensive.

 

I went to the tire place today and got prices, also got some online, about the same price as a 285/75-16. Price isn't that big of a deal at the moment, I just want to know if anyone else has ever run them.

 

A 285/75/16 and a 285/70/16 should be the same width just different heights. Your first number is the width of the tire. The second number is, I think, a percentage of the width and tire height or something like that.

 

That's what I believe I stated. A 285/75-16 =33" and a 285/70-16 =32", however they are both a 285 width. I'm pretty sure you just agreed with me. Where are you going with that?

 

Yeah your mpg is mostly due to the width of the tire and not as much as the height. That being said your mpg decrease should be close to the same.

 

It's a pretty rare size. I've seen more folks talk about 275/75R16 than 285/70R16.

But try to get ahold of BlueNorthToyo. I think he was going to get General Grabbers in that size.

 

Well now that I re-read what you posted then what I posted, I'm not real sure where I was going lol.

I say if you can find a good brand that makes that size at a somewhat reasonable price, then try it out. I honestly don't think the 285/70 is gonna be any different than the 265/75 mpg wise.

 

Ok, so I found Nitto Trail Grapplers, in a 285/70-16, online for $209.59 a piece, which is a good price considering the odd size they are. Now I'm going to see if Discount Tire or a local tire shop will match or beat that price, can't remember if they do or not?

Lol, i don't have it yet, but baseball is almost over so I'm going to start working more, and my awesome dad said he would pay for half of my new tires!

 

Well thats nice of him, the running boards look nice on my truck. I have no mud flaps, so that will keep the gravel off the sides i hope.

 

Yeah, I was really surprised when he said he would help me pay for them. I used all my Christmas and birthday money to pay for my wheels and 5100s. I paid for them all myself, just not all at once, it's taken me almost 2 months to pay for them making weekly down payments, which i made my last payment today actually. i did some odd jobs around town for family and friends for cash to help pay for the wheels. I never even thought about using the running boards for that, that's genius! Glad they worked out, I was nervous about them fitting.
