    Howdy y'all.

Im having an issue with my 2018 Tacoma. The paint on the roof and hood is blistering and peeling. Toyota is refusing to remedy the issue since it's out of warranty.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips?

Sand entire roof, prime, apply vinyl or paint.

Paint fails, only way to fix is to repaint

Rest of the truck is perfectly fine. Roof and hood have extreme UV damage.

Toyota is well known for paint issues on the 3rd gen Tacomas. They did a recall on several colors. Just not black. It appears to be the same issue though.

Yeah. I get that. But the paint literally falling off of a 6 year old truck is insane.

Those are some deep scratches into the metal, which introduced moisture under the paint. That'll be their out on a warranty claim. Fwiw, Toyota's are known for shit paint. Just ask the guys with white ones...

Paint has changed to be more environmentally friendly, this has impacted it durability. Newer paints require less paint for the same coverage, this results in a much thinner paint layer. Scratches, lack of waxing, and proper care can result in paint failures.

Those “imperfections” looks like neglect. Sorry but I wouldn’t warranty that even if it was still under warranty.

    Pics of the hood?
How many year has it been like this? It looks like several.
The roof looks damaged, like someone was loading things up there with the scratches.

Haven’t posted in over a year, but saw this and had to say woah!

My 2016 is outside 90% of the time for the last 9 years (Oct 2015 build) in direct UV/Sun exposure. That includes Kansas weather, occasional small hail (I do put it inside of a barn if I know ahead of time it’s going to be really bad), snow, and everything else.

    And it looks like this…

    upload_2024-7-11_12-23-47.jpg

I do wash it usually once a month or so. I don’t use any kind of coating, ceramic, wax, etc. Just plain old jug of car wash soap or the automated wash in town. It’s had a roof bag up there a time or two. Been under some low hanging small branches on trails or overgrown pathways. And still looks just fine.

Seems like OP has had something directly scratch into the paint at some point in the past? I’ve got scratches all over the hood from the kids or others sitting things on the hood and letting them scoot around :( But they are still not that deep…

    upload_2024-7-11_12-26-21.jpg

Rock chips are more of a problem for me.

My guy those are deep scratches past the primer that are rusting and have compromised the clear.

I don't doubt that the paint was failing, but there's far more than that going on here.

Are you hauling trash on your roof or what? This looks like a metal truck bed.

Center console divider thingy, rubber bed mat and side steps for the wife.
FWIW, the roof on my 2017 with 26k on the clock is failing as I am typing this. Clearcoat is toast and has started flaking off. Shit paint job is an understatement. Will need a complete re-paint of the roof at some point in the near future.

My paint is so thin, it is lighter shades on some door jambs and the fender edges. Like you can see the primer through it. I thought of taking it back, but then Im like, eh, it kinda of makes it unique because of how they did cost cutting and whoever I trade it in to wouldnt really care. Like how the seats used to be full "leather" before Toyota made the part that touches the center console fabric.

Yes, all that have pursued Toyota over neglect and extreme sun exposure outside of a warranty period get the same results. If you care about how it looks, you have to take care of it (wash/wax regularly).

So what do you do now? Sand, prime, and paint/wrap. Or, get a roof rack and pretend its not there. Thats what most of us do.
