Want Sport Trim with Off Road Features

I agree with you completely. I like some of the added features the off road has but I like the look of the sport much better. I am now in the process of adding any off road upgrades I can. I owned a 2002 Taco with the black fender flares for over 14 years. Only took 5 years for the fenders to look grey instead of black. I wish I could find a comprehensive plan on what to upgrade to make it better than the stock off-road. There are so many sarcastic opinions out there but I can't really find a true guide.

 

I don't think it's possible to add the crawl control features. Perhaps a rear locker but that may take a larger rear end. I think the ORs use same rear end as the Tundra because of it.

 

Toyota's plastic formula in 2002 wasn't nearly as resilient to fading as what they use now. The 3rd gen Off Road's with black fender flares still look fine after 5yrs plus.

 

It's my understanding that the ORs have the larger Tundra rear ends. Their engineer mentioned this on YouTube.

If they went that direction, they'd have to put the larger rear ends and wiring harness etc, in all the Tacomas in the event that someone might want to add a locker. And then there's the crawl control stuff...

 

Yes. It's been decades with little choice, and at times when you have to look far in other regions if not wait seriously long for specific Toyotas. Dealers also trade allocations. I understand my this week luck of getting the TRD OR long bed was a dealer trading allocations or fluke. Most in my region are no or few options or quite loaded. CO and west has lots of my config.

My '99 4Runner had the plain plastic fender flares and so does our aging Outback. You'll start to see what would be dings or scratches pretty much don't show with those.

 

Want in one hand ... crap in the other ... see which one fills up first?

That's correct but Toyota could just actually have the option to build the truck how you want... Ford and other companies do it. So it can be done Toyota and jeep just never have to make you buy the pricer model.

 

Why not a 3rd gen Off Road Access Cab? Could easily have the seats reupholstered to solid black.

 

Or put a rear locker in a SR SX.

Still easier if the manufacturer builds what the customer wants.

lol, whether it’s color matched paint or black the material underneath is the same is kind of inconsequential. My point is color matched paint is more expensive. Not sure if the black is paint or it’s just black plastic, but just as true either way.

 

I think that's the color of the plastic. It's like the plastic up front. Rocks don't chip it. They leave a ding, but there's no paint to pop off.

 

I’m always ready and willing to be wrong, but I think all the plastic on the vehicle that’s color matched is painted. Bumpers, fender trim, etc.

 

Is that the way your 2015 is? Do you see any paint chips on the front end of the plastic parts? My 2016 is definitely colorized plastic.
