Hello tw. I have heard about a problem with the 3rd gen’s being starved for oil on steeper inclines and off camber situations, which I have got the dash notifications for a few different times.. but has anyone had the Low engine oil pressure notification and had your truck shutoff? This is the 2nd time this is has happened to me and wasn’t on a crazy angle or anything. Is this normal? Also how is this prevented in the future so I don’t go rolling down a hill. I posted a vid of this one time for context https://youtube.com/shorts/IlhhYK_u4wE?si=GttzWpWzZIivieCq

:eek:That is definitely not normal, and is a concerning safety issue if encountered on a highway or steep hill. Not criticizing you, but why would anyone even ask if something like it was “normal”? I would go to a reputable dealer before driving it much again and have them check it plus they should get the codes. Hopefully it’s drivetrain related and you are still under warranty. It may just be something like the fuel pump going, which might be under a recall, and hopefully it’s not too major.

It's hard to tell through that aftermarket exhaust, but that does not sound like a happy engine.

Pull the codes. And what's your oil level when it's level?

What I meant by that question is, does this happen to 3rd gen’s when you are off roading and pushing the truck to its limits. This doesn’t happen when I am driving under normal conditions. I had took a pretty hard skid plate hit about 20 seconds ago as well but no visual damage to the undercarriage. Both times this has happened have been from off road use.

Will do that right now just got home from the trip. It definitely didn’t sound happy when I started it again but that unhappy idle went away after about 10-15 seconds.

Not normal, and that is not really pushing or using the truck harder than toyota intended. If you were driving through that at speed, I'd agree.

Hopefully you are in 4 lo trying to crawl around out there. Also, is the truck a manual and did you just stall it?

Wait, after the incident you didn't check the oil level? And you also drove home without checking? This is why I don't buy used vehicles. Why???

Yea, and you had the oil light come on and the truck shut down on you. With a then hard restart, and rough running for 15 seconds. You also stated you bashed the undercarriage. An oil change yesterday doesn't mean crap. Weird reasoning on your part. Good luck and hope it's really ok

You mentioned not crazy angle, but video showing you climbing rocks. Also, your video, sounds like your truck engine flooded out with fuel, after it stalled. Like somebody else somewhat said, I would drop skid plate, and check out engine oil pan, if smashed.

I had all the aforementioned warning lights and the low oil engine pressure light AND my motor shut off, once. That was about a year ago. Rolling backwards in drive on a trail at a slight incline. I turned the ignition off then on again and there were no further issues.

You were rolling backwards in neutral when it shut off?

Correct. Rolling backwards, it stalled and the engine shut off. I have an automatic trans if that helps at all.

It seems to be a somewhat common occurrence when it happens in that order. I read about it a fair bit around TW after it happened to me.

I've done that once too, backing a trailer up my drive, it rolled forward 15 feet while still in reverse.

Truck shut down, the screen lit up and called me a dumbass. However, it started right up again and didn't sound like it was chewing gravel when doing so.

You can’t roll it backwards in D or lower gears, or N on an off-road AT, the hill assist control makes terrible noises and will lock it up when trying to roll it backwards.

I personally hate that system as it’s dangerous to put it in reverse on a hill to back up because you only have brakes holding you up then. I always used to keep my 1st Gen in D or lower gears when rolling a bit back to get another running start to get over a rough section or step.

    Whole lotta' momentum
Interested to see what it is, I do some rather heavy off roading and my truck is a 2wd ( , I know) so I do roll back quite often while in drive to get some momentum. I agree that rolling back on a hill while in drive is just the best option at times. Will see, I haven't had anything like this happen to me though.

Yep sounds about right lol, I was terrified it was locked up and I was stuck in the middle of nowhere but it worked just fine afterwards.
