Yes. It must be that many here forget or don't know, and it is pretty easy these days. Then consider a 2024 raises the bar for safety, comfort, performance and more.

New model year vehicles are priced high to capture the early adopters, and then gradually shifts toward reasonable-land as the product matures so more people can afford it? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you!

*note: Tacoma prices remain batshit crazy well beyond what they reasonably should, so standard economic models may not apply

The pricing topic is legit though. For US customers, wishing to drive a pickup truck, there has been quite a shift over the past 20 years in price and not much change in terms of MPG’s.

I bought an ‘06 Corolla at around 13k new, easy purchase, cheap transportation. My ‘05 Tacoma had a very comparable MSRP, also around 13k.

For 2024, Corollas start at 22? Meanwhile Tacomas start at 31?

    That’s a significant shift.

This guy has an interesting theory. I skipped to the point. He talks about exactly your Corolla vs Tacoma. Video starts at about 2:00. Here's the key quote, "Pickup trucks are now Louis Vitton purses for men."

Average new veichle price in what...$46-48K? Option to option, the Tacoma is the exact price as its competitors.

The Chicken Tax is why we can't have small economical pickups in the US anymore.

Nothing competes directly with the tacoma in terms of long term value in its class.

I paid $38,500 for a 2024 Tacoma sr5 4x4 discounted 4k off Msrp. The deals are out there, go at the end of the month and find a dealer who is willing to negotiate or wants to move vehicles off their lot

If that is what it is, I'll take it. It's been just like our living in a municipality that manages things well.

Our just getting the Tacoma is so far no different than our 1999 4Runner and 2015 Sienna SE having features and availability different than the competition. The tax was just like our living in a great municipality - in addition to features, safety and reputation, a nice reward to more than get it back when you sell.

Disclosure. We value the 2024 Tacoma crash rating more than many seem to. Everyone should having lost a family member from the combo of a jerk driver and mediocre crash ratings. We also value the long bed. You can get that with a Nissan but it lacked other important features.

Time will tell with our new Tacoma but since 1999 4 other Toyotas had incredible reliability, resale, and were pleasant to use. They all served us 9-22 years. Two had 10-15 years of hard use. We're happy to pay this tax for a chance of it repeating.

You value crash ratings and roll around in a 1999 4 Runner? seems counter intuitive

Yes on crash ratings, no on still having the 4Runner that happened to be good among peers in the 1999 crash testing.

We lost our family member more recently and my guess is most who've had to deal with that would put value on crash ratings. The new Ranger and equivalent GM mid-sized pickups are not yet IIHS tested. I sure hope they improve.

What vehicle was the family member in? Terrible thing to experience.
