I don't believe you will have to trim anything. Maybe remove the mud flaps. One thing I've noticed about this size is how much variation there is in the actual size of the tires. Cooper stmaxx in 255 is 32.8 inches, just like a 285/75r16. But the toyo M55 in 255 is a little over or just at 34 inches. My falkens are 33.1 for another example.

I'm no expert but I do know quite a few dudes with this size and none of them, including me, have had to trim anything.

I didn't need to trim but I had to take off the mud flaps.
I did put on superbump bumpstops with a 1/4" spacer on the front.
Also added an add a leaf in the rear but that was just to match the extra lift on the front.

Just got my 255/85r16 Falken Wildpeak AT4Ws installed at Discount Tire today! Looks great, I've got a little bit of rubbing, but nothing too crazy. What're ya'll doing with your spare? Mine won't fit underneath in the stock location, and I don't want to eat up more bed or get a swingout.

It should be able to fit. Did you try and deflate it? Or bend the tabs back ?

where are you rubbing? I want to do the same setup on my 2013. I plan on going off road so rubbing won’t work out too well

I'm rubbing on the front edge of the fender flare. I'll try and get a pic of where it's hitting, but it is just barely touching, even when compressed. I'll probably break the sawzall out and whack it off this weekend.

Gonna try to do that today. I have a compressor, so deflating it isn't an issue. I'm just worries about diff clearance, because it still touches even with the tire all the way back at the hitch.

Thanks! If you would post a pic that would be awesome when you get a chance. And if you’re trimming too. I’m excited to finally get this truck off of pavement.

Was originally only going to stick to P-load options but with the AT4Ws now offering a 225/85 size the AT3Ws didn't have it's really making me think of going skinny vs wide 33 for my next tire setup, especially since clearing these seems like it'll be easier and require less work than clearing 285s. And at least for the 17" P285 and 16" LT255 options I've looked at the total wheel/tire weights are pretty similar which helps offset the higher weight of a C vs P load tire.

That's almost the exact wheel/tire combo I'm looking at going to once my current 32" AT3Ws wear out. I think I'll ask my shop I'm planning to have do the install if adjustable UCAs will help with front tire adjustment to avoid that kind of rubbing (have them on for shock travel clearance but the adjustment options might help with clearing tires too).

    Just upgraded from 265/75R16 AT3W to 255/85R16 AT4W.

    Before/after:
    20240726_123051-COLLAGE.jpg

Here is my experience so far, copied/pasted from my post in the AT4W thread:

My tires were delivered early and I got them installed Wednesday. After driving around with them the last couple days, I can say the ride quality is almost the same as my old SL tires. They don't seem any louder, and even though they're 14lbs heavier than my old tires, I don't really notice the weight. I can feel maybe just a bit more grab when breaking just as I'm coming to a complete stop, and maybe just a bit more of a push needed at initial acceleration. But after that, getting up to speed is fine. These narrower tires seem to corner easier too, but the heavier turning on my old tires was probably due to the offset of my wheels (-25) and the high castor of my alignment (5deg). I did get a CMC last week in preparation for these tires and I'm glad I did. I do still need to trim the front fenders a bit as those still rub a bit when turning in reverse. As far as MPG, still need to put a few more miles on 'em to see where I'm at. I'm definitely revving higher and cruising at a slightly higher RPM. It also doesn't seem to know when it wants to shift into the next gear, even worse than the usual gear hunting. Looking at getting an OTT tune to adjust for the larger tires plus a few other things. Don't think a re-gear will be necessary.

Overall, I'd say I'm very happy so far!

That's super helpful to me, I'm the same tire situation as far as tire sizes/types other than my truck already having a tune on it prior to upsizing from stock tires and having less aggressive wheel offset (+13mm -25) and thus less scrub radius to deal with on the front tires.

Tune definitely helps with shifting behavior upsizing even to 32" tires, I highly recommend. I also added a manifold spacer (Anderson Engineering) which gives up a bit of top end horsepower (over 4K RPM) to lower the peak torque range from 4K RPM into the 3K RPM range, which I found helped the truck maintain overdrive gears on the highway much better when combined with the tune by making torque better at highway cruising RPMs. I'm hoping these two things will be enough to make 33s manageable for longer distance driving too.

I actually just got the OTT tune yesterday. Huge improvement! Thanks for the info on the manifold spacer, I'll check it out.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
I went on a road trip yesterday. I filled the tank when I left and when I got back. 331 miles/17.1 gallons - 19.3 MPG! I haven't seen that number since the mods began 2 years ago. I attribute it all to the skinnies! From the first drive, I've noticed a considerable difference in the rolling resistance vs the 235/75/16 Generals.

Thinking about a set of Falken Wildpeak M/T in 255/85r16 for my 2009 Tacoma with factory 'y spoke' 16in rims. My truck has approx. 1.35in of lift in the front via bilstein 5100s (all around) and bilstein mid-duty coil springs (+0.5in) set at the second spring seat (+0.85in). The truck's suspension is otherwise stock. What issues, if any, can I expect if I size up?

The unknowns are the OD of the tire, and the forward pitch of your lower conttol arms. If your adjusters are positioned such that the rear attachement is toward the tire, and the front is toward the frame, which moves the LBJ forward and resulsts in a caster around 3degrees, give or take, and your od is 33 or less, you should only catch your factory flaps when reversing uphill with the wheel near full turn.

ok guys need some help. Currently running falken aw3 285/75/16 I have some tread left on them , do a 5 tire rotation. Maybe 10k more miles till new set.

However I had a flat on one of them so currently running without a spare and not liking it. @Discount Tire i wasn't off roading and my flat on the tire is an interior wall slice from street driving. Does that sound like a tire malfunction that may be covered by falken for tire failure?

    so my options are

stick with 285s. Buy a new tire for my spare and then buy 3 new ones when time for new tires and move a used one to the spare

    or

keep driving no spare and switch to the 255s. if i did this could i buy 4 and take one of my 285s as a spare since the diameter isn't too far off? save a little $

I am second gen lifted with the 6112 Bilstein's on the scs br6 wheels. I would hope to get a little better gas mileage, but worried truck may look off. any ideas?

Idk. Probably because switching tire size has a mpg change and it’s a factor to consider when purchasing different sizes
