There's negatives to too much, the sealant oozes into the sump, peals off and clogs the oil pump pick up screen.

Also it drastically affects torquing when theres too much sealant.

Theres many reasons and many imperfections.

Its not as bad as people think though.

I was looking a used truck a while back that had the front cover resealed and you could see lots of black fipg oozing out between the cover and head/block. Looking at a factory sealed engine there is very minimal grey fipg that is oozing out. So what you’re saying makes total sense. You’d think Toyota would just have commanded the robot t
thanks. Must be a big gamble for techs when trying to do that job.

The dealer was in there twice, it failed, and now there is a reason for the failure, over tightening, broken housing they knew about, and "tried" to "fix" hide, cover up. They owe you but, getting them to admit that and follow up... Is a whole different story. Good luck! Ski

Thanks, I will update with what happens. Just very little faith in this dealership. I left out the worst part in my initial rant…so I took the Tacoma there in March of 2023 for an oil change, 3 months after they did the 2nd Timing Seal, usually do it my self but is was cold out. Anyway the service advisor tells me the tech said the coolant looks dirty and recommended a flush for $295. I told him to pull up the work order from 3 months earlier and explain to me what part of the truck they dumped all that new coolant into. You can’t make this stuff up!

Need to check to see if it’s coming from the inspection port gasket of the timing chain cover first. If so it just replacing a gasket which is like 7 bucks. Toyota actually told me it was my timing chain cover and quoted me 5k to take apart and seal. Took it to another dealer who said they were full of shit paid 30 bucks and i was no longer leaking oil. Make sure u check!

you can see the metal inspection plate with 4 bolts. Underneath that is a gasket seal that can break down over time and cause a leak as well. My toyota guy says 75% of the time the leak is actually coming from this and not the block. Problem is some dealerships will charge a customer 5k and say they need to seal the block when really all they do is swap a 7 dollar gasket and clean up the area real well.

Make the dealer fix it again , they will probably try and back out , but think about it two times and leaking again . You have a very strong case . People need to be held accountable, period

Sorry about this OP. I bought a 2016 in November with 55k and it has a timing cover seep. I had a 2007 taco previously that was great and did not know to look for a leaking timing cover on the 3rd gens. I noticed it 2 days after buying the truck and dealer would not fix it under the 90 day “powertrain warranty” it came with.

They offered to pay half the cost of the repair, but I have concerns about having the engine pulled to chase such a small leak.

I have had the truck 4 months and put about 1500 miles on it and there is no notable loss in the dipstick.

I plan to it a shot give sealing it externally here in a couple weeks, but honestly probably could drive the truck for the rest of it’s life with the seep without it being more than an annoyance, and it is annoying to me as it starts blowing back on the block and the oil pan.

I'd find to way to get them to buy it back. They sold you a vehicle with an oil leak that was not disclosed at sale.

Thanks for the explanation. I’ve always wondered where the breakdown is, and figured it was in manufacturing. Thanks for the confirmation.

I spoke to the service manger last week, and told him it was leaking again 15 months after 2 attempt to seal. He said they would work with me but wanted to take a look, so in took it in. They cleaned it up and want me to bring it back again this Friday to confirm exact spot it’s leaking. Does anyone know if they can seal it by pulling the radiator and grill off, rather than pull the engine?

So back again with the timing cover leaking for the 4th time…dealership sealed it again in March of if this year, at no cost, I noticed it leaking same spot as before when I changed my oil yesterday.
Can I get another 100k out of this? Does anyone know if the leak becomes more than a just a nuisance?
I’m totally done with this dealership…
Debating whether to wipe it down and trade it back to the dealership, and make it officially their problem or just keep driving and squeeze as much equity out of this vehicle as possible. I’ve run nothing but Mobile One synthetic and ethanol free gas in this engine, would really like to get more miles out of it. So frustrated…145,000 miles

Just got the call from a reputable shop with the news of the timing cover leak - he told me if it was him, he wouldn’t be in a rush to fix it and just keep an eye on it. Thoughts?

and to confirm - Toyota isn’t doing anything to fix this out of warranty, correct?

They know it would break the bank…I’m hoping the fact that they don’t acknowledge it’s a defect is because they know it doesn’t become a catastrophic leak‍♂️

Clean it up real good with spray 9 or some other grease buster, watch it for a month or two and if it starts leaking try swinging the power steering pump out of the way and sealing it from the outside with some fipg or other sealer. It’s worth a shot considering Toyota isn’t gonna help and it’s gonna cost you thousands to fix it right

I’ve seen some cases where it drips oil on the ground not many though. Lot of guys sealed it from the outside with success
