First pour. Ethanal on the nose, with some light spice, vanilla and caramel. Burny at first, followed by lots of sweet and a some rye spice. Pretty tasty. I’m not sure it’s as good as HighWest bourye, but still good. Cheers.

For less than $30, this stuff is great! Mellow, cinnamon, vanilla, heavy brown sugar. Rumor is they are discontinuing it, so I bought a few backups. Old Grandad BiB isn’t as good that’s for sure

Just felt like posting a location with no bourbon. Kharkiv Ukraine back in December. Really want to murder Russians all day …bourbon helps

The Penelope...Architect, Philly pick. Marshmallow on the nose, cream soda, light fruit, peach...very peach mid palate. Interesting is that the usual MGP fruity notes are a bit muted, and the finish really comes forward. Interesting is that it's very similar to Town Branch. Peach up front. For the similar proofs, the Penelope is a bit hotter, but just a bit.

Very similar profiles. Just out of happenstance I picked up the Town Branch on mega sale, the same day the Sauce Penelope arrived. Town branch nose is a bit off. It’s kind of astringent, but sweet. Penelope is sweet right off the bat, marshmallow, and creme soda. Penelope is a bit hot on the front and back of the palate, but not much. Town branch is more mellow front and back.

Both deliver heavy peach notes, some pear, cinnamon, and a hint of oak. Penelope is a bit heavier with oak on the finish. This Philadelphia pick is amazing !!! I highly recommend both. Town Branch was a total surprise for me, especially because they distill their own juice.

A recommendation I haven’t tried yet is to mix a blackberry whiskey with sparkling limeade. Sounds pretty good but I have no idea where to find that.

Haven't been on much lately, but speaking of blackberries...tis the season in my backyard :D

    20240714_140837.jpg

I must admit, regular bourbon (I used Green River) regular simply lemonade and 2 scoops of blackberry mash was much better, the Crown's a little sweet with fresh blackberries

O.K....so here goes. A while back, when I didn't have much extra change for nice bourbons, I treated myself to what I thought was a good bourbon. 291 Rye. It had good "ratings". Absolutely the worst waste of $100 that I didn't have to spend, ever. I've even gone back to try it again, and it's still horrid. A friend who does not like 291 either (the aspen staves), gave me a handful of samples to try out.

291Barrel Proof Bourbon 127.6 proof. - Hot on the nose, and kind of astringent with some sweetness. On the palate, hot, forced aging, rough, nothing I'd ever, ever buy.
291Barrel Proof Rye 128 proof. Sweet on the nose, I can pick up the grain. On the palate, maple syrup, sweet lingering rye, cotton candy, raisins. O.K. this is actually pretty decent, I'm surprised
291HR Bourbon 126.2 proof. Super brown sugar on the nose. On the palate, hot, sorta sweet, hot, rough, gross, aspen staves are overwhelming, disgusting, I dumped it.

I have three more sample bottles to get through, and man oh man, I don't know if I can man up. Pot stills, and for the most part, they use 10 gallon barrels to force up their proofs. Sorry, I'm from Colorado, and this stuff is overpriced garbage sold by some has been "artist".

New Riff Single Barrel Rye 107 proof:

I decided to go ahead and purchase this as I've never tried it out (Sauce). For a Rye...a younger rye at that, I'm very surprised how mellow and aged it tastes. On the nose, it's sweet, rye is very present, raisins for sure. On the palate, very delicious up front, light, spearmint, green vegetable, apricot, and a smooth lingering finish. Really, this drinks like a much more expensive bottle. I'm all in. BTW...I had the chance to try out their new 8 year offering....it's absolutely amazing. Can't wait till it hits the shelves around here.
