We're still deciding but Ford started out being repeat Toyota owners. Every one has been reliable, ages well, and held value.

The new generation Tacoma has long beds a Ranger won't have but rear seat is smaller. It has top safety pick status few pickups have. If you must have locking rear differential, that's on an Off-Road trim/version or above where Ford has it as an option on different trims.

Something outstanding to my wife and I in testing a few new generation Toyotas is having or going back to dials, buttons and levers vs having to use touch screens for some settings.

We've done very well buying Toyotas new and keeping them 9+. One Toyota we had was low miles used and we sold it at age 22.

 

I’ve owned a second gen tundra (2021 trd off road limited 4x4 double cab) it’s a great road trip car and light duty Home Depot car like the Tacoma but it’s not a real work truck. Payload won’t touch your f150 or any full size domestic, my tundra payload was only 1100 pounds if I recall

 

If you're coming from an EcoBoost to a 3rd gen you're going to be greatly disappointed. The 4th gen would be similar in power delivery, but there are no used ones in the 1-4 year range like you're looking for.

 

You must not be considering all or current Tundra models. My sister got sick of Ford SFQ and traded SuperDuty type Fords for different generations of Tundras for her horses operation. They both very much exceed that payload.

The new Tundra might suit the OP here if a Tacoma is too small. We're still on fence with a new Tacoma for what will be a miserable back seat when there is a 3rd passenger.

 

Have you not been following what’s going on with the 3rd gen tundra it’s an epic shit storm with the recalls and dealers won’t even accept trade in of 3rd gen tundras because people don’t even want the brand new ones

 

Yes, but that's just how recalls work, and it is far off topic from knowing my sister's two generations of Tundra can only have a 1100 pound payload. The recall is unfortunate but federal law prohibits selling new vehicles with open recalls, and several states have laws about resale of used vehicles with recalls.

Again, it's unfortunate for all regarding the recall. It's also fortunate we're in a time when both the manufacturers and the laws are better. Way better than a time when as consumers we ate those problems.

Otherwise for the OP, the new Rangers have nicer back seats than Tacomas, both firms have lots of options, and there are even leftover 2023s for some brands.

 

There is no vehicle on this planet that is as bad as a ford..they own the top spot for being junk. You will enjoy your Toyota

 

If you really need the size/ power of a half ton definitely consider something else. Unfortunately the current problem with the Tundras makes for a difficult decision. I "upgraded" from a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500hd gas truck when I realized once I sold off some equipment and a big travel trailer, I had no need for such a big truck Yes the Tacoma can't compete with the towing and hauling capabilities that the Chevy had, but more than makes up for it with better mileage, incredible reliability, better handling and less problematic options I really didn't want or need. I'm thrilled. Just the amount of time I have saved not sitting at a dealership waiting for a goofy problem to be repaired makes me feel younger! Lol! I also find most parking lots easier to manage as the Tacoma pretty much fits anywhere.
