a bolt on wont work for your needs? If your going the above path may as well go full bed to engine caging.

Well my bed is cracked in a couple spots, and I figured I'll be probably caging the cab of the truck one day.

Like Cory said, thats going down the money rabbit hole. As much as I would love to go that path I still have to use the truck with the wife and dogs on offroad weekends. Otherwise the whole truck would be turned into a luxury prerunner.

finding a used bed from a junkyard and removing on your own is a way cheaper option, most bolt in bed cages are 1200+ bucks. not to mention do you really need a bed cage like in the picture?

Ok. That’s not a back half really. Back half insinuates chopping the frame off. To me at least. 4-5k is definitely a fair price for that.

I definitely don't need that bed cage, but I don't even long travel

    It's sick as fuck regardless

Well said, and i agree. I wanted to add a lot more along the lines of what you said but didn't want to open a rabbit hole, especially since the guy i replied to was looking for a more simple explanation to start with

To me, a bed cage like this is the worst of both worlds... you don't gain the frame cut rigidity you would have with an actual back half, you can't tie into a cab and engine cage later and you still lose basically all of your bed. I suppose if you want to run longer shocks then the higher mounting option is nice but you could just run a bolt-in prefab bed cage from Camburg or Dirt King at that point and you wouldn't lose the ability to throw a mountain bike over the tailgate (priorities, okay?).

I guess if you really want to run double spares with leverage like a prerunner but you're not even LT in the rear yet! ;)

My trucks getting wrapped up from the SUA as we speak.

I would assume that bedcage would be way stiffer than a stock bed and a bolt on bed cage? (Correct me if I'm wrong)

What do you mean I can't tie into the cab or engine cage down the road?

Not being rude but genuinely curious

Literally, none of the above is true. It’s more than sufficient rigidity. You would be able to notch without worry about folding the frame, and there’s 15 different ways to tie in at a later date.

Downfall is, until a full cage is tied in. That frame is going to endure some absolute hell in the uncaged area in front of it.

    I take it back!

What, not even the part about mountain bikes?! ;)

I guess I'm just not a fan of half measures. If I was doing something that wasn't bolt-in then I'd at least want to think about my long-term vision rather than jumping on something prefab/predesigned that happens to be available. I guess it doesn't really matter if you end up gutting parts of it later.

IMO this is thinking long term vision. A back half for a leaf spring truck is unnecessary and wildly different that a link back half. So really you’re starting over regardless.

A rear cage like this gets the job done above and beyond what’s necessary for leafs, doesn’t cost what a back half does. And play your cards right when you link, you could chop that bitch off and sell it.

So I’m caught at a crossroads with my truck. I want more power. But I’m not sure I’m about that LS life for this truck. Turbo or SC? Coming from a life with turbos, I have a hard time settling for a supercharger but know it’s going to be a total bitch to turbo this thing as I’d like.

Turbo would be cooler for sure. The no lag of an sc would be nice though

It's less Tacoma and more mod
    Turbo 1GR is a good combo, @Torspd

I don't have hardly any lag with spool assist turned on in my Haltech, 3.4L spooling an old Garrett 60-1

I really should just DM @Torspd and chat. Because I need boost in my life again. And I’d much rather listen to a turbo.
