The NorthStar AGM Battery + Voltage Booster Upgrade

Looks like I left out a crucial detail: the box will need to be welded to the frame rail.

I'm fine with moving to a group 31, but I'd like to use this battery until it dies... it's only ~6mo old at this point.

But! It looks like the Rago group 31 box will fit the 27F battery, so I can install it for the current one and upgrade when the time comes.

Do you still have the Rago box that you don't need?

 

It's at my bro in law's farm but I can go get it. It's a little dirty from sitting around but stainless so probably would clean up OK. I have some R4T terminals with it as well, also pretty dirty.

I looked at some RV versions too which were more sealed and plastic, there's a style which mounts to the frame rail, but accessibility had me a little concerned.

I lost interest once I stumbled on the dual battery kit for my first gen Tundra, that's where I intended to use it, cause the sheet metal is kinda thin.

 

Yeah, I'll buy it from Amazon if I have to, but if I can get it cheaper that's even better. Dirty doesn't matter; I'll have to prep it to weld it anyway.

Definitely don't want a plastic box, I don't think it'll last down there.

Yep! Wish I had seen that. I ended up relocating it to the back of the cab, behind the rear seat.

 

Was thinking I might need to replace my X2 Power 24F battery at some point. I was in BatteryPlus store back in November at got a printed out price of $349. Just looked online today and it's $449 and their order online/pick up in store 10% off deal, maxes out at $30. It's a nice battery but might need to look at other options.

Ouch! You guys reminded me to check mine - it hasn't seen hard service, but it's probably time to think about replacing my 2016 Northstar 27F. Buy once, cry once is my SOP, but will have to see what my options are...

 

Mine's a 2018, thought maybe should replace due to an upcoming road trip. 6-8 weeks CA>Telluride>S.Utah>Arizona, mostly on dirt and away from any crowds. If I was just staying local, I'd keep it till it fails. Just can't figure out how price jumped up $100 in 6 months and also why it's $20 more than the 27F battery, which makes no sense.

 

Mine was fine as long as I didn’t run my fridge. 6-8 hours of not starting the truck overnight with the fridge on and it was dead. Usually I get 48ish hours if have everything cold without starting. Batteries in general have gone through the roof in price. I paid $225 for a deep cycle lead acid battery for my trolling motor and it has a 3 year warranty. Which is $75 a year Vs $50ish

 

Why not test the battery to see how much life is left? I’ve seen new batteries fail too.

 

I just did have it load tested and tech said results were like a new one.

 

Speaking of 27f and thin sheet metal, looks like I have a new item on my to-do list.

 

The is is why I run a small red top. Only 30lbs. Easy enough to take a deep cycle marine battery on trips if called for. But I’m not one to drive around daily with a whole bunch of camping/apocalypse shit semi-permanently bolted onto my truck.

Weight is the enemy!

 

Anyone have a source for the HKB electronics products? The adjustable version has been out of stock for a few months and the non-adjustable ones say in stock but when i tried ordering it says "we are not accepting orders at this time"

 

Is that battery sufficient for winching? Now that I have a proper dual battery setup I am hoping to get a smaller starting battery.

 

In my personal experience I'd pass on the HKB booster. My non-adjustable died after running it for 18ish months along with my alternator but I'm not sure if one lead the other to fail or if it was a fluke. I've been running without the booster since installing a new battery and charge the battery with a mppt charger now that charges the starting battery once the house battery is charged. The alternator was a pain to replace so I'd rather not do it again (to be fair it was 11 years old with 100k miles on it when the alternator failed).
