    Hi.

I am guessing this has been discussed a lot. And I have found a few threads here and there. But nothing recent.

I have a '22 Tacoma OR AC. It came with the Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT tire (Kevlar). 265/70/16. It's been fine. But as others have noted, it wears quickly. I'm at 23k and down to 5/16". Don't know what the previous owner's driving habits were, but I think it's the tire, not the usage.

I can get very good MPG on that tire. And it's been all around good.

Wondering what people's top picks are for an AT tire: looking for sweet spot combination of MPG's and off-road performance. I'm not doing crazy off-road $h!t. But want to know that if I get in a jam in the backcountry, I can get out.

    Thank you in advance.

I’m from the Pacific Northwest and I have Open Range AT tires from Les Schwab. I get the same miles per gallon from them as I did from the Goodyear Wrangler tires that came with the truck.

My Wildpeaks AT4s have dropped short-run MPG, but freeway seems the same. Given the Goodyears were very worn down and the knobbies are bigger now on new tires, not horrible. And considering I do not drive freeways 20 miles a day currently, then such is.

One thing I found with offroading is that I do not play with the skinny pedal much on dirt because of lower speed on the terrain. The higher idle speed often provides enough forward momentum so that offroad MPG can be higher than asphalt on the "grocery runs".

It's discussed a lot with very little good information coming out of it. Since manufacturers don't publish rolling resistance and I don't know of any independent resources that do, I think we are stuck with assuming any decent P (SL load) A/T tire in the same size is going to have about the same rolling resistance.

This was my drive to work yesterday. A good mix of city and highway driving, but also in rush hour stop-and-go traffic. Running 265/75R16 SL rated Wildpeaks.

The MPG does go up pretty quick when I hit freeway and constant speed. "Skinny pedal" ...

I can't find any MPG info on it, but it looks like a good tire...

I'm surprised you are doing so well on those. When I look at Discount Tire's comments on that tire, they rate it 1/5 on fuel efficiency... That's why it's difficult to pull the trigger on this one. I'll just have to make a choice and life with it.

    Thanks.

Just make sure you don’t get a 10 ply tire as they are considerably heavier, unless of course you need a strong tire for harsh roads.

What do you mean? The video was about the general design challenges of an all-terrain tire.

You won't get fuel economy data from anywhere, because there are too many factors that go into fuel economy. Tire manufactures could publish rolling resistance numbers, but they don't. We're stuck assuming similarly spec'ed tires (same type, size, load rating, etc) will have similar rolling resistance regardless of manufacturer.

BFGoodrich KO2's. Average 13.5 mpg baby. By far best all around off road and on road tire. Lets go

    Non yet.
I have the BFG 255/85/16 AT3 MT's. Loose 1 mpg at 70 and 2 mpg at 80. This is with out using cruise control. If using CC is goes down a lot more as it stays in lower gear and shifts a lot and don't even think about going over 80 if you want any kind of mpg.

Those of you running taller tires aren't going to have accurate odometer or MPG displays unless you've had it recalibrated.

Toyo Open Country AT3 here. I was looking for a good looking AT tire, that wasnt super heavy. Comparing your current tire weight to what you are buying will tell you how much fuel economy you will gain or lose. This is rotating mass, and is the lead contributor to fuel mileage, good or bad. Already off from the factory, by about 2 mph than what you are actually going anyway (with stock tire size). The taller tire will actually give you a more accurate reading. In my case, from stockers on my sport, to 265/70/17 (close to 32") I am actually pretty accurate on the speedo, verified by 2 separate gps. Ski

My brother has run a set of Hankook Dynapros for almost a year on his sport and has had a great experience with them. He mainly drives highway roughly 50 miles a day and averages low 20’s

If you go to Discount Tire's website and use their tirefinder, or whatever it is called, they will rank the tires based on your criteria. In those rankings, one of the metrics they offer is "fuel efficiency." While I don't know how they determine the fuel efficiency of the tire, it's one form of data.
