Yea he’s been pretty much MIA for the last couple years. I wonder what happened to him. He used to live on the Land Cruiser forums.

It's Bentonville so they're probably handling the non-kit Porsche 356 Speedster or Rolls Royce Phantom that was ahead of him

None yet. I’ll call again if I don’t get updates by the end of the day. I don’t wanna bother him too much. This isn’t the first time I’ve been frustrated by lack of communication from mechanics. Ok they’re busy but I’m here wondering if he’s putting dozens of hours on my truck, or it’s just waiting on a part, etc. Just a quick text would be appreciated.

If you saw this guys place, you’d think he was some fly by night shade tree, but his reviews were excellent, so we’ll see.

I wish I could listen to it run and do some quick diagnostics like disconnect injectors to isolate the bad cylinder and run a compression test. I don't hear about 5VZs with a misfire.

Noisy wrist pins -- I've dealt with them.

There’s a lot of 5VZ misfire threads out there. Most ended up being bad injectors or jumped timing.

He just said “I’m messing with it” yesterday and I haven’t heard back since. I’m just kinda nervous he’s racking up a big bill tearing into it, although I asked him to call if he felt it was gonna be something major.

I had a Nissan dealer tech run up a bunch of hours only to tell me I needed to spend $4,800 for a new engine on a 4th gen Maxima when it was only from leaking side feed injector o-rings that were causing uncontrollable flooding. I had it towed home and fixed it in my driveway for $19 in parts.

If your belt is healthy, you can rule out jumped timing. I think I have some old 5VZ injectors (the brown ones) that I will give you -- but they need to be cleaned and tested because they have been sitting too long.

    To reiterate -

You dropped off your truck, and are normally disclosed a diagnostic fee.

A shop will not spend countless time working on your truck, but will do a few things, then back to the main job or two.

He or she quoted you diagnostic, not repair unless you specifically stated "fix it, cost is no issue".

Regular shop practice is to say "I found you have a short on this wire harness"

Whether they spent 5 minutes to find the issue or 2 hours, they rely on their own experience to determine the issue. You agreed to pay diagnostic, which means you should not pay them more or less depending on how long it took to find the issue. The time spent is irrelevant.

If any costs will accrue outside of diagnostic, or if replacement part is mentioned, you receive a follow up confirming if you'd like to proceed with the repair.

So your statement about racking up tons of hours and shit makes no sense dude.

Your own stress will make you lose what little hair you have left.

it's probably still in line... most shops stop at an hour of diag and call to ask permission to dive further if they haven't identified the issue yet lol
