The good thing that came out of the dealer trying to take me for a ride, was I decided to rework that engine up to be something really cool for a common car. It was my youngest kids car. He had a lot of fun with it. Actually its still running and with one of his best buds.

Feeling deja vu, think this fear was mentioned before when it was dropped off at another shop for something else before...

It looked ok from the outside, but the grooves on the inside could be worn out. Although wouldn’t that cause a misfire on both sides?

I understand, but I just would’ve thought 3 days would be enough time to do an hour or so of diag and give me a call to ask for permission to tear into it more. I guess I must just be on the back burner tho. He did have a lot of cars out there.

Unless you specified a time table to him then you just have to wait your turn, that's pretty common practice.

I’m just lucky I can bike to work, otherwise I would’ve been screwed this whole time.

I can't figure that out, if you skip a single tooth on the drivers cam pulley would that fuck with the timing of the passenger side after 1 rotation? Assuming no tooth skips on the crank pulley or passenger cam pulley?

Yea I’m not sure. Maybe it would just affect one side. I did also have the random misfire code.

It'd be pretty hard to skip timing just on that side, the tensioner is on the other side of the engine and that cam gets nearly 2/3 of a belt wrap around it with no slack, if this side has slack then the other side has more and both wouldve skipped.

I did read through some similar threads on the 3.4 and 4.7 and the cause ended up being “it skipped a few teeth.” Maybe I wasn’t getting the whole story with my cheap scanner, idk. Another thread ended up being mismatched wires, so maybe I messed something up pitting the NGK wires in.

this is easily the most likely, i've seen it happen too many times to count on this engine

If they weren't in the correct order then that should've been a problem before the fan failure since you said you didn't remove the wires. Unless you did remove the wires?

No I didn’t remove them for the fan clutch, just unclipped them from the timing cover and moved them out of the way.

Did you take any pictures of the fan clutch aria when you were working on it or after you were done? I feel like wires got damaged or cut in the process.

You didn't have this issue prior to the fan clutch correct?

That was when it failed. I didn’t have the issue before, no. The only other thing I can think of is that it overheated when the fan fell off, although I didn’t notice any steam from the radiator, and temps are normal now on the OBD reader.
