My $.02 as a firearms instructor and shade tree gunsmith, the safety on a 2011 shouldn’t catch on the slide as it cycles. If it’s bouncing under recoil it probably needs a new spring and detent to hold it in the down position more securely. If it’s bumping on your thumb under recoil and engaging, that’s a grip issue and it will be hard to change just for that gun.

Changing to a single stack 1911 style may not solve the problem if it’s your grip that’s causing the safety to activate. Have you considered a S&W M&P 10mm? I’ve got one without a thumb safety because I’ve shot Glocks for so long I don’t want to deal with a thumb safety. That said, I didn’t like the way the Glock 10mm felt (like a 2x4) but the M&P feels really good and it’s still a double stack mag. I'm shooting Underwood or Double Tap hard cast 200gr loads and haven’t had any issues with the gun. It’s pretty pleasant to shoot with Federal or Speer 200gr HST/Gold Dot for town use too.

You know I completely respect your experience and advice. My friend has an M&P ... I'll try his and likely go that direction based on your input and sage advice.

    Sincere thanks Brother! :fistbump:

... that makes my decision quick and painless. Appreciate you speaking up, Blevin.

    :hattip: You’re welcome.

Try shooting or at least handling several before you buy if you can. Sig and FN both have 10mm on the market now, fair warning- they are proud of them. The Glock seems pretty popular if you have really large hands. The Smith was the best compromise size wise for me.

Mine is strictly my woods gun and honestly is probably overkill for the critters we have down here but I wanted a 10mm for if I ever get to travel your way or out west. One day…

One day fer damn sure! :fistbump:

Hand size is a factor for me, I love my 45ACP 1911 and shoot it consistently with absolutely no issues, that's why I went with the 1911 10mm. I might still take a look at the Springfield Armory "Ronin" 1911 10mm single stack in addition to the S&W MP. My gut feeling is my grip issue might be the width of the double stack. But what do I know, I put boxes on airplanes for a living. :duh:

Thank you again my friend. Have a great day! :fistbump:
EDIT: I'm partial to the feel and look of wood and steel.

Grip width is a factor on the double stacks, some are thicker than others at the top. If you shoot a single stack 1911 without the safety engaging issue I’m going to guess width or the shape of the safety is the main issue with the other gun. Those Ronin are nice guns. Good luck in the search for the right one.
