    Hello,

Is a diff drop needed for a 3.5 inch lift?

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
A 3 1/2" lift on the IFS will have your ball joints binding (or very close to) and give you no suspension droop to speak of. I would suspect that ride quality would suffer because of how stiff it will be at ride height.

Tacomas tend to do better with 2 1/2" or less. YMMV

A 2-2 1/2" lift with quality components will not only look good, the ride quality will be firm but compliant.

Before you start buying parts it may be helpful to figure out what it is you want to accomplish.

Are you getting a lift to fit bigger tires/looks? That's perfectly fine but you may be disappointed to find out you've still got rubbing issues with your larger tires depending on what you go with.

Trying to get into some more offroading? Like @OldSchlPunk mentioned if you go too high on the lift you'll lose all your down travel and likely have a rough ride.

Lots of helpful people on here who are willing to share information. Just need to know a little more about what you want out of this.

    So, what's your budget? Goals?

Very good points! Having an understanding of where you want to get to will save you money and frustration.

No off-roading at all. I currently have a 2/1 factory TRD lift with the 4-runner 17 inch TRD pro wheels 17 by 7 with +4 mm offset

looking for bigger more aggressive tires that will fit those wheels.
I like the Yokohama Geolandar MT but tough to find a it in a 275
Also like the Toyo MT but same problem
Can’t really go 285 with the 7in wheels.

so I thought maybe I’d start with a 3.5inch lift and go from there

lot of options out there but I’m finding out also a lot of road blocks..

bottom line if I could find a bigger/more aggressive tire that would still fit my current setup I’d be fine with that..
I’m currently running falken wildpeak 265/70/17

In your situation you may be able to get away with those 275s with what you've got. An experienced alignment tech can help out by pushing your LCA cam bolts toward their forward-most position. SPC UCAs are another tool for getting a very specific alignment setup on these trucks as they are adjustable, but you'll need to locate an alignment shop that has experience with them as they are not super common.

Most of the issues you run into are rubbing on the mudflap/fender liner/fender flare area. If you're willing to do a little reshaping with the heat gun or just trimming back some plastic you'll be able to fit those for sure. I don't think more lift is going to help a whole lot.

Rough Country 3.5 Lift SCS BR6 wheels rolling in 285/70/17 Falken Wildpeaks
the Rough Country 3.5 inch lift kit is a pretty good option within a competitive price.
They have definitely improved in quality.

If you're looking to lift more to fit bigger tires, that's the wrong way to go about it. A lift doesn't help you fit bigger tires because the sound you go over a speed bump and the suspension compresses, you're right back to tire fitment as though you never had a lift.

Wildpeaks in LT285/70R17 are approved for 7.5" - 9.0". I personally wouldn't hesitate to run them on a 7" wheel. YMMV.

^^^^ plan ahead and check your state laws CAREFULLY. A drop bracket lift requires cutting a cross member, which means it's irreversible and some inspection houses can, have, and will fail your vehicle for having an altered frame.

This has burned more than one TW member in the past.

if you really want a DD non-offroad drop bracket, you should have bought a Chevy.

We've covered this earlier in the thread. I think OP is looking at other options.

Anytime, hypotenoper. You guys love to give people shit about not researching enough and then don't bother to read a thread before posting.
