SUMO TNK : '08 DCSB TRD OR

Picked up and installed a new-to-me Pelfreybuilt gas tank skid to replace the stock TRD OffRoad plastic toboggan skid.

The seller was local and the asking price was less than a dinner for 4x. Swooped on it.

 

Had a chance to visit La Grange OHV Park today.

Had the place all to myself and got to explore as much as I could. La Grange is much smaller in size, # and length of trails, and degree of difficulty compare to Hollister Hills, which is the only other OHV that I've driven.

All the above factors made it well suited for a beginner like myself. I wheeled thinking I was racing Baja.... and I crawled pretending I was a pro at KoH. And then I posed for celebratory photos.



Then I noticed that my front driver-side tire was flat. Perfect time to use the Viair 440p!




Left the OHV Park and at a nearby gas station, I found the source of the leak.



In my day of fun, I must have crawled KoH at Baja speeds. Cracked my wheel.

A wheel/tire shop in Ripon, CA squeezed me in 45 minutes before closing and saved my ass so I can drive home (~100 miles away).

 

Sounds like a wicked fun day except for the rim failure. That environment looks fun as hell.

How fast was the leak? Cause it looks like it wouldn't hold any air at all. No giant spare tire in your bed?

 

The tire was holding air at the offroad park after the refill with the Viair 440p. I didn't notice the HUGE crack until I left the OHV park. I then tried refilling it with air again and it would hold air but I did a slow test roll and could hear air whistling with every revolution of the wheel. Luckily, I did have a giant spare to help save my ass..

I guess its the price to pay for having fun........

 

Pay to play doesn't just mean straight up cash but also the joy of things going south hahaha.

Surprised that giant crack was holding air but it must have gotten bigger as you rolled on it. What kind of rim is that? It's not a bead lock of some sort is it?

 

Very true Russ! Although this repair will cost a pretty penny, I forgot to mention, the crack wheel from playing at the offroad park was the conclusion of a solo 2.5 day soul cleansing adventure! I got to check out Castle Air Museum and camped at Shaver Lake.

I did notice that the damaged wheel was leaking air recently. It was a slow leak, like 3-5psi every month. I thought it was a puncture and didn't think it might have been a hairline crack.

Didn't see any cracks when I filled it with air at the park. Maybe caused the near catastrophic damage when rolling on it from the park to the nearby town. I didn't think it would hold any air when I refilled again but it did and would only "whistle" when rolling on it.

The wheel design/style is one that I'm not willing to give up. It's an old school mid to late 80s JDM 6lug wheel made by Speed Star Racing (SSR). Aka= Super Soft Rims

Probably not meant to go wheeling with/on!

 

Wow that’s a serious crack! That was a beautiful place to camp though, looks like a day well spent. Hopefully you can track down a replacement. I’d imagine those are tough to find

 

That looks simply amazing. Beautiful camping spot, great off-roading and I would absolutely love to see a SR-71 in person.

That definitely must have been good for the soul. Moments like that are when it's truly great to be alive.

Ouch damn cracked the wheel. must have had a hairline crack or something already if you were taking it easy.

 

How does one remedy a cracked wheel? Buy a complete new set of wheels! I'm not rich by any means, but the Jpn Yen to US $ is soooo much in my favor that I swooped on a new set of Work WHEELS. ETA: Aug 2024.

The cost for repair on the SSRs was the same for 4x new Work wheels. Now I can take my time (procrastinate) rebuilding the cracked SSR.

 

I also picked up the Morimoto X3B Third Brake Light during the 4th of July sale.

I like the hooded/lipped housing on the Morimoto X3B and thought the lens matched better with my Alpharex Pro Series tail lights.

The optional F1-style braking rapid flash is a nifty feature for this upgrade.

Nice build. I'm considering the same Headlights, 3rd brake light and tail lights that you have. Was wondering if I Could get your opinions on those items and if you'd buy the same ones again after having had them?

 

Still love them! In an earlier post, you may have seen that I had to warranty a Headlight and that was taken care exceptionally by Morimoto. That's important.

Install was a cinch. Fitment was spot on.

Yeah, I am pretty much decided on the brake lights. THe headlights I do vacillate between the Morimotos and the TRD pro smoked OEM lenses with the ultimate headlight harness and halogen bulb. Not sure if you have any knowledge or comparison experience between that vs the Morimoto Headlights.

 

@Smills91 Sorry, just got back from yellowstone/grand Tetons and wifi was spotty at best.

I don't have any experience between the two that you listed. But I am using the ultimate Headlight harness with my Morimotos. I had the harness paired with my previous set(s) of Headlight housings so I continued to use them.

I don't know about the TRD Pro housings, but the Morimotos led Headlights were brighter than my Yita Motor halogen housings with slightly higher wattage bulbs than the stock 55w.

 

Although I didn't vacay with my truck... here are some Yellowstone and Grand Teton views that I got to enjoy for the last 7 days. Super different from what I'm used to seeing in the Sierra Nevada range.

Montana and Wyoming makes me want to become a Rancher.

 

Beautiful. It's been many moons since I was last there. It's awesome in the summer there. Glad I don't live there in the winter.
