Oil Pressure at Extreme Angles

So, does anyone know at what angles the v6 can safely run at before the engines starts being starved of oil?

 

I'm going to take a leap here and make the assumption that it should be fine at any angle that your truck won't roll on.

 

Agreed, since the oil system is pressurized and not dependent on gravity, you would be fine at any angle, even upside down... not that that is safe, lol.

 

Hmmm, dunno bout all this. Isn't there still a pickup in the pan like most others? I'd be wary of any prolonged crazy angles front to back that might starve it but that much of an angle from side to side would have the truck flopped on it's side before the starvation occurs. That being said, haven't seen any postings about anything bad happening like that.

 

I think the fuel would cut off from not having fuel to the fuel pump before the oil would run out of the system... you still have everything in the oil filter and all.

I went down and up Hell's Gate in Moab without an oil pressure light coming on. I'd expect that's about as steep and long as one would go. I had to ride the clutch in 4low to keep from killing it.

I can't imagine getting much steeper than that for any extended period of time.




I do wonder however about the auto trannys...

 

Interesting topic wouldnt think about the oil level when wheeling... good to know though.

 

Slightly off topic, but X-runners have been known to spin a bearing, when doing a little drifting.

I have made this deep sump baffled oil pan. I have been running it about two weeks.

I also repositioned the drain plug. The stock oil drain, is not in the low spot in the pan.

This adds about 1.25 quarts to the capacity.

It also kinda scares me. Is the oil pan the same on between the x-runner and Off-Road?

I would think you would be able to simulate the same thing at sharp angles as drifting.

 

The oil pan on the 4 x 4 is a deeper than an X-Runner.

 

Nice fab work there neighbor.......Same stuff is known problem for my Mazda P5, it corners so good it starves itself into same problem...that and the oem fill only = 3.7 qts including the filter. I don't autox and it's fr wheel drive so no drifting either. I use a v6 626 filter that gives it little over 4 qt capacity even tho I'm not doing the fun stuff in it.

Could Xrunners use a 4x4 pan & pickup to avoid this or is there fit issues?

 

Nooo...not upside down. You'll get oil in the cylinders and that'll be just as bad as water in the cylinders (hydrolock).

That I do not know. I know the lower pan will not bolt on. If you replaced both pieces (uppper & lower pan) with the pick up tube, maybe.
