Assuming that's it's a diesel with a 540rpm pto, the engine rpm should probably be 2000-2500 for normal operation. Generally as SKD mentioned, the high the rpm the better it will run.

edit: I usually set the throttle on my tractor to run about 2500 rpm for most jobs.

Thank you guys. Regarding PTO shaft length. I just went back and checked and with the brush hog on the ground I can barely get the shaft onto the tractor with the shaft fully compressed but it does go on. With the 3pt all the way up the shaft still has about 1/2” of travel before bottoming out. I checked this by pushing in the button on the shaft and feeling how far I can pull the PTO shaft back. Is this length fine?

It sounds like it is a bit long. So long as it is not binding up anywhere you'll probably be fine. Optimally I think you'd want at least 6" of slack fully compressed or 6" of overlap fully extended. If it is too long, you should be able to pull it apart and cut a few inches off the inner shaft.

All the ones I’ve cut, I’ve had to cut both shafts cause they usually bottom out on each other, if that makes sense.

As long as it doesn’t bottom out while raising it while it’s hooked to the tractor, it should be fine.

Ah bud I wasn't poking at ya. Just remembering how much those long drives eat into life.

YES. Same here. KR & me have basically the same tractors. They say in the book to not even engage, move, drive or operate below 1700rpm on our tractors & PTO speed is 25-2700rpm

There is actually a little tick mark on the RPM gauge that shows you right where it should be while the PTO is running.

Agree. You should have several inches of travel on that shaft as you go thru the range of motion from up to down & then still have some room to move in case of a bounce on the ground.

The dealer I bought my tractor from told me to run it between 2000 to 2500 rpm. I had been pretty much sticking with 2000, but then a month or two ago I had the dreaded emissions light come on. I increased the RPMs to 2500 and the light went out about 10 or 15 minutes later. Since then I've always been running between about 2300 and 2500. The light hasn't come back on.

Ah yes the dreaded regen light. When mine comes on it some automatically takes the tractor to 2700rpm for about 20mins to burn all that out & clean the filter. There is a switch to "postpone" it, but it will just come back on next time it notices it. How often this comes on depends on the brand & fuel along with how you run your tractor. If you putter around? Its gonna come on a lot more often in a Kioti or Kubota. My newer tractor has 350hrs on it & it has only regened 3 times.

Got friends who refuse to run past 1200 or so & they only get about 25hrs before a regen. They complain mightily about how it takes over their tractor & revs it so hard....

Some tractors come on every so many hours, others just as it sense obstruction in flow.

At mowing height I have about two inches of travel. Just enough to BARELY get the PTO shaft on.
At the shortest distance which for this tractor is all the way up, I have only 1/2” about of travel left until it bottoms out.
    Should I cut it about 2-3” ?

I just bought a Chinese knockoff Yamaha outboard 6hp 2stroke. Things are going to get feisty, especially when I tell my wife it’s just a starter engine and we are going to buy that 12hp 2 stroke next. :bananadead:

No I don't think so. That could change a little if a lot of extras are included. The BX1500 is only a little bigger than regular riding mower, and it's only 15hp. So I would really not be expecting much.

Kubota GF1800 diesel front deck mower. Anyone know much about these? Looks to have the 3cyl diesel that’s done so well for Kubota. I found one semi-local I might take a look at for a mower to use. I like the fact the front can be changed out to a blade for snow (don’t think I would use) or a rotary broom!

Looks like a precursor to the zero turn mowers.
