First thoughts had been that the drive shaft had snapped or U-joint failed but checked and that was not the case. Rear brakes were checked at dealership when I was getting some other things done last month and were fine but even with emergency brake set, the slope of the hill and weight of the trailer/load it likely would not have held.

Looked up parking pawl and if it failed would the truck free wheel down the hill?

What was your experience w/ the Harrop e-lockers front/rear?
Were they completely reliable in use & operation?

Yep, wheel chocks should be used as long as I have time to get them in place. Right about the manual trans also. It was only about 50 yards down the hill to the woods, truck door was open but I might not have even gotten in before the trees/brush on driver side slammed the door shut and ripped off the mirror. Could have likely crushed or cut off any body part that was not inside. Then the impact making it stop would have thrown me against the windshield (no time obviously to fasten seat belt). I am fairly sure it was moving about 15-20mph when it hit the woods. Too risky for sure. Didn't even take pictures I was so upset.

In retrospect I should have been using the rear locker to back it up the hill. ECGS just replace harness for them two months ago and verified operational.

I don't think the locker would have made any difference to whether the truck let go & rolled down-slope.

I was asking more about your overall long-term experience with the Harrop lockers, before this accident, like in normal 4x4 use day to day? I've been thinking about doing a Harrop elocker on front. (My 2014 TRD OR has the factory rear e-locker already.)

Love the Harrop's although if you go on YouTube some people note they might have an issue engaging in certain situations. I don't use them extensively but they have never failed to engage when I use them. Other lockers like the ARBs depend on a compressor of course and as long as its working properly they are a solid lock when engaged. Guess there are always pros and cons for either.

So if the parking pawl failed would it have free wheeled down the hill? I've driven it some short distances and nothing seems wrong with the transmission. Plan to run it around the block in the future to check it at a bit higher speed but tie rod is bent some and want to be careful. How can I test to see if the pawl failed?

Yes. Chock the tires (all four) until the issue is diagnosed especially with a sketchy parking brake status. I have used large rocks or chunks of quarter-split firewood at campsites and back roads in a pinch. You don't want it to take off on you again if someone taps it in a mall parking lot with even the slightest incline.

Yeah, if the emergency-brake didn't hold, then the only other thing holding the truck if it is in "park" would be the parking pawl inside the automatic transmission.

I would guess that if you put the truck on a very mild slope and tried to put it in "Park," that would tell you whether the pawl is broken or not. (If it doesn't hold, it's broken.)**

** but you may not want to do this: if the pawl itself is snapped off it is floating around somewhere inside the automatic trans and could cause further damage? IDK. It's also possible that the pawl just slipped or got rounded-off by extreme pressure, (the way a wrench will sometimes round-off the edges of a nut that can't be loosened) rather than actually breaking. In which case it may still work but would probably be weaker & less-able to hold weight.

Thanks very much for that info. Driving it would be a bad idea then, even to test it. Dont want to damage trans if that was issue.

I don't know for sure that it would damage it, but it seems like a reasonable supposition. The parking pawl is in there "in the guts" (i.e. inside the main large gear housing) of the automatic trans.

Someone else w/ more experience may weigh in as to the relative risk or non-risk of doing the modest test I suggested.

They are usually made of very tough, high quality hardened steel, so if it somehow breaks loose from wherever it is sitting currently, it could take off in there and quickly do a lot of damage.

Never even thought about that one. Might be last thing to pull when I eventually send to salvage yard. Always had a cover on it and in good shape. Will add you to list of last items to let go.

If the engine cover is in decent shape, I would be interested. Tnx

Sorry to hear about the incident. I’d be livid!

I’m in need of the drivers side foot rest and perhaps the radio bezel of those are available

Sorry to hear about your truck brother but you're gonna come back even better next time. :muscleflexing:

If it is an option I am looking for the driver front door glass run, part number 68151-04030, thanks.
