Careful ,Changing oil

I just did an oil change this morning, and couldn't get the plug out of the canister to drain the housing. I had to removing the canister with my Motivex wrench, and make a mess.
After cleaning up the canister, I tried to remove the plug with an impact wrench and a pipe wrench. Still no luck. Fortunately I was able to just replace the o ring and install the canister with the new filter. I will purchase a new Canister and plug for my next oil change.

* Please note I used a torque wrench on my last oil change, and did not over tighten the plug or canister.

 

I do every oil change like this, a lot of pros dont ever remove the cannister cap.

We crack the housing loose, let it drain slow, then remove.

 

Don’t miss that design of the canister oil filters at all

One time a while back, the whole shebang started coming loose when I was loosening the center cap, so I put the oil filter wrench on and snugged up the housing just a tiny bit, then the center cap came off just like it's supposed to. No big deal ferris wheel.

 

You can convert to a spin-on filter if you don't mind spending a few bucks

I don’t remove the canister cap either. Don’t see the point.

 

Just curious if the prior oil change(s) were done at dealer or another shop. When I did my first change (I have not done any dealer ones), the lower cap came off with barely any fight. I've read horror stories on here with oil change places overtightened everything they can so just wondering who did the one prior.

I do that plug and the stupid push in drain since I'm in no hurry. Putting your thumb over the niple and pushing up equally with both hands usually engages the drain any the same time without oil going everywhere.

The last line on my post read "I used a torque wrench on my last oil change"

I did not want to keep pounding w the impact wrench because the pipe wrench was slipping , and fins were breaking, due to the irregular shape of the housing.

did you add oil to the o-ring, and what did you torque it to?

i always add oil to the new o-ring, and just snug it up with a normal wrench. never had a problem removing it.

 

What torque did you use for the drain plug?

yes.....do it just like a metal oil filter like its been done for 75 years
saw this the other day

 

I did oil it and torqued it

 

30 ft lbs- drain bolt
18 ft lbs - Housing
10 ft lbs - housing cap

 

So if you have torqued the drain plug on the housing to 10 ft lbs (hand tight), the impact will take off without a fuss. Something is not adding up in your story.

 

In my opinion at 10# a regular wrench should get it off and all the others too.
