Yea...like you I have never had it running, but after reading what you posted, I went out and tried it running. No change. Strange little problem. Not the end of the world, but annoying. Honestly when I saw "running" I thought boom solved! but no.

Did you make sure to 'click' when you put the gas cap on last? I believe i saw somewhere along the way that the cap not being tightened tp first 'click, can cause that maintenance light to come on. Just for kicks, check that and then try resetting again?

Some trucks use the option trip "B".

I have two 2012 Tacos and one uses trip "A", the other uses trip "B" to reset.

An acquaintance of mine had a Scion, and the procedure was SUPPOSED to be the same but hers wouldn't reset either. After searching forever, I found this little blip that said to try clearing BOTH Trip A and Trip B to zero, THEN do the maintenance reset procedure, and it worked. I assume it's a YMMV thing though

Another "try this to avoid the dealer"... Give that reset button a couple of good quick presses. May not be contacting.

On my 2012 I turn ignition to see mileage.
Set it to trip A and leave it there.
    Turn ignition off.
Push and hold down reset button then turn ignition forward while still holding reset down.
It shows dash marks then they disappear and it shows all 00000s.
Let off the reset and it shows trip A with mileage. Not 0s but the mileage on trip A that was there before.

Yep...tried all variations of the above...many times. The only thing I can think is the fact that the perhaps the missing TPMs are causing an issue (far fetched). They will be replaced next week and I will be down to only the one dash maintenance light. Since every light was on when I bought it...progress, but still!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and wanted to check if you were able to figure this out. Just got a 2012 Tacoma and I'm not having any luck resetting the Manit Reqd light (I tried the procedure from the manual in Trip A, ODO, and Trip B). Thanks in advance!

The procedure I've always used has worked on every Toyota I've encountered.
With the ignition on set the trip meter to Trip A, Trip B, or Odometer (depends on model but I believe 2012 is Trip A), turn ignition to lock, while holding the trip/reset button turn the ignition to on, the odometer should blink ------ ----- ---- --- -- - and then say 000000, after it says 000000 release the trip/reset button, reset complete.

Thanks! Appreciate the response. I did the same a bunch of times on my 06 Corolla, but so far no luck on this Tacoma. Tried starting with engine running (per manual) as well as with key in ON position...

    I fixed mine!

Hopefully can help someone: For me, I zeroed trip A and zeroed trip B first and that caused it to work.
    So:
    Turn car on.
    Go to trip A.
    Zero by holding trip button.
    Go to trip B.
    Zero by holding trip button.
    Go to trip A.
    Turn off car.
    Hold "km/mph" button.
Click power button twice with foot off the brake.

bought a used 2014 Tacoma. Had maintenance light on when I got it. Took it to my Toyota mechanic and he said it will not turn off. Tried every procedure and variation of the above.

Did anyone ever figure out what was going on and how to solve this? Seems common enough.

Bumping!!! I know it's not a "big" deal, but I hate lights.
    YES I know the procedure.
NO it's not resetting. The trip button works, but will not get Dashes or zeros on gauge nor will it reset to zero.
    Any other ideas...

We figured out effectively what was going on with my Maintenance light. Mechanic said that the computer actually says that the maintenance light is off -- so doing the procedure does nothing, because when you scan it, it says that it's off...even though it's clearly not. It's caused by some very bizarre wiring issue or similar that is causing that light to stay illuminated even when the computer is switching it off.

His suggestion was to remove the bulb.

as typical in newer vehicles, the instrument cluster is now a mini circuit board that routes ground signals to relays and control modules outside of the instrument cluster and sometimes back in to the light bulb in the cluster. Generic problems I have heard of, known to cause instrument cluster lights to malfunction and stay lit include : mashed pins at connectors (caused during dash removals), burned relays, frayed wires, disconnected grounds, and then there is the issue of a cracked circuit board in the cluster that was common on chevys and fords but I havent heard of it on toyotas yet.
so it seems, the ground signal from the dash button push, combined with the signal from the key switch, tells the Engine control computer to clear the code and sends out a ground signal to a relay turn off the dash light . If it happens to be a "Normally Closed" relay then it could leave the light on if it burns out. I wouldnt feel comfy removing the light bulb ( light bulbs are resistors in a circuit)
and so IF this issue is not involving a reference voltage or ground from outside the instrument cluster I would suspect the cluster itself, unless and if there could be a relay that supplies voltage to the light bulb got stuck ( I havent checked out the tacoma system yet to know if its even possible).

I wonder if these instrument clusters are reasonable priced display modules (like on the ford) and if you replace it, it all reads the same mileage when you plug the new replacement in because the info is actually stored outside the cluster in the ECM ? does anyone know ?
that would suck to have replace an instrument cluster

All the logic and control for the Maint Reqd light is contained in the Combination Meter (Instrument Cluster), nothing external to the Meter can affect it.

Mileage is only stored in the Combination Meter (Instrument Cluster) on 1st and 2nd gens.
There's been a few people that have had issues resetting the Maint Reqd light but I haven't seen where anyone figured out why.
