The question often arises in my head, as I ponder how my setup plan for my 320 lbs bed camper on my new Tacoma 2024 Offroad, of how much can I load the truck with.

    This lead me to page 194 of the user manual under Capacity and Distribution, as I search for clarification on how to compute the numbers. Toyota states the following;

"Cargo capacity depends on the total weight of the occupants.
(Cargo capacity) = (Total load capacity) — (Total weight of occupants)"

Steps for Determining Correct Load Limit —
    1. Find your payload capacity
    2. Subtract the total weight of occupants
    3. This will provide the remaining safe weight that the truck can carry.

    The example provided is

Where XXX is the payload capacity....

"For example, if the 'XXX' amount equals 1400 lbs. and there will be five 150 lb passen- gers in your vehicle, the amount of available cargo and luggage load capacity is 650 lbs. (1400 − 750 (5 X 150) = 650 lbs.)"

In my case the total weight of me and my companion is 330 lbs, the trucks payload is 1200 = 870 lbs is the remaining capacity.

    870 lbs - 320 lbs (camper) = 550 lbs

    550 lbs - 250 lbs (Stuff in bed) = 300 lbs remaining

User Manual page 613 section "Vehicle capacity weight" has the specific "Vehicle capacity weight (Occupants + luggage)" numbers by truck model. In my case it's 1200, but it is best to get the number from the door on your truck as it may have an updated number based on the specific VIN number.

Hopefully this clarifies to someone else the question I had of how much I can carry on the truck passengers and all. I am glad I did not have to account for a full tank or anything else.

Payload (what it says in your door jam) is all the added crap in your truck that did not come from the factory including you and your passengers

It's weird that for payload they don't count the driver, but for the towing capacity, they generally include a 150lbs driver and you subtract cargo and passengers from the towing capacity.

The driver weight is indeed included. You have to subtract the total weight of occupants, this includes Driver and Passengers.

Incorrect. Payload includes: 1. All people in the truck, including the driver; 2. Anything in the bed of the truck; 3. Anything on the bed of the truck, such as a RTT, camper shell, etc.; 4. Any added accessories mounted on the truck, i.e. anything it didn't roll off the assembly line with, including different bumpers, added winch, added roll bar, added lights, the plastic hula doll on the dashboard.

Talking about payloads if fine until you realize that 1200 pounds gets eaten away rather quickly.

This is the main reason I did not add a decked system to my truck. It's 200 lbs. In my calculations I have 300 lbs to work with.. more than likely that will be taken by Skid Plates and Front bumper.... and thats its...... 1200 payload gone in a heart beat.

I misworded my post. What I meant by payload excludes the driver, is that the driver is part of the payload. Whereas generally the towing capacity is with a 150lbs driver and a full tank of gas. Whatever more that the driver weighs over 150 plus cargo and passengers is deducted from the towing capacity.

Bottom line, don’t exceed GVWR and GCVWR.

No worries. If I thought you were snarky, I would have ignored you and not reply.
