How many gallons are in the tank when the low fuel light comes on? I haven't found that in the manual. Edit: I found it in the manual finally. After the low fuel light comes on, there's 2.7 gallons left. It's on page 574 in the manual.

I always heard Toyota leaves about 3 gallons, I have no proof of that though

It varies and partly depends on how fast it thinks you're drinking it.

Says 25km left when it comes an. At 12.2L/100km, that 3.02L left. Almost a US gallon (3.84L) a far stretch from an Imperial gallon (4.54L).

Now, no way to know if they left a buffer or not and how big. Get CAA or AAA depending on where you live and let it run out. I should do that, I have Premium CAA and they fill up the tank, it would pay for a good chunk of the membership.

That would be accurate if it came on earlier. Wife’s Nissan comes on at 100km instead of 25km like the Taco. Divide by 1.61 for miles.

From other threads, it appears that there are 2-3 gallons left when distance to empty is 0.
This is going to annoy the beejeezus out of me. It'll take a lot of re-training for me to run it to empty before refueling.

The question is: "When is it almost empty?" I'm used to a fuel gauge that tells you how much fuel you have left, not one that lies to you "for your own good".
Guess I'm going to find out. Picking up my truck today (finally) :)

Drove until 24 miles to empty. No fuel light turned on. Filled up with 14.5 gallons. Avg of 20.5 mpg, so if I'd driven till "empty" would have put ~15.5 gal in. Toyota holding out on that gas.

The manual says fuel tank capacity (reference) is 18.2 gallons, (69.0L /15.2 imperial gallons).

The fuel gauge is bugging me. That is why I came here looking for answers. I ran it down to 10 miles left to empty. I was running late and in a hurry, and had about 20 miles to go. I felt I had to stop and fill it up. It clicks off at 15 gal exactly. Now I am thinking how can it be that there is 1/2 gal in the tank and I only put 15 in a 18.1 gal tank. So, I kept going and was able to put two more gal in it. I filled it up to the cap, no spills... Gauge says miles to empty 267. Hum, 267 miles? My math says 19.1 mpg x 18.2 = 347.62 miles. So, I guess they are saying to run it down and you will have almost 3 gal left. Basically it is not telling me the truth. All of the cars I have owned gave me the true amount of fuel left. I am not a 16 yo girl and need tricked into when to get fuel.

I would rather know exactly how many miles to no fuel. This is just stupid

The Toyota tech on YouTube talks about why you should never force a top-off like this: the extra fuel winds up in the vapor canister where it destroys the charcoal in that canister. That leads to no end of problems and a $3,000 repair.

Forget the "miles to empty" or the low fuel indicator. Run it down to quarter tank and then fill it up. If it takes about 13 1/2 gallons then your gauge is accurate.
Mine seems to be accurate so I can run it to quarter tank without worrying (that last quarter tank is for when I screw up and miss the last station for 50 miles).

The amount of boomers and millennials that don't understand that the DTE # reported by the car must be a fake number that errors on well past the safe side is tiring. No matter the car forum, people seem to be complaining about the DTE number.

What is not tiring and is actually a tragedy, is that the visual fuel level indicator isn't accurate at all, and doesn't start to drop until you've driven into 3-4 gallons of gas after filling up. So now the visual fuel level indicator is bullshit as well as the DTE. And because of this, I am scared.

I have never gone under a 'fake half a tank of gas' by the bullshit level gauge, but I also have filled up 14 real gallons.
And luckily I was spared common core math, but 1/2 a fake tank of gas is a bit less than 14 gallons, I think.

And 14 real gallons is definitely more than 1/2 of a real 18.2 gallon tank.

I've checked my gauge several times and I'll check it periodically forever. When it showed half-full a fill-up took 9.5 gallons so it's accurate within a reasonable error. I haven't managed to hit it at exactly 1/4 tank but it still seems to be accurate based on my reading of what the level was.
There is a known bug where if a small amount of fuel is added to an almost-full tank the gauge shows a fraction of the actual usage. To reset, turn off, hold the "ok" button, turn on (don't start) and wait for odometer to stop blinking.

EDIT: I've also noticed that the first quarter-tank takes a while to start dropping. My G2 did the same thing. That top quarter was more like 7 gal instead of 5. I think the same is happening with the G4. As long as it's consistent it's ok. The problem would be if that last quarter tank is not accurate.
