TRD Pro vs Ranger Raptor

Nowadays, the Ford Ranger, GMC Canyon, and the Chevy Colorado all look better than the Tacoma, IMO.
And, I am not ashamed to say that I buy vehicles 90% on looks. Life's too short to drive ugly vehicles.

 

1985 Toyota truck was my first new vehicle purchase and loan, all on my own.

 

The Colorado and Canyon look great but I worry about the durability of them. Check the forums. The frame is like an inch thinner than Tacomas in the rear, fenders caving in when you lean on them, wiring harnesses wearing through from rubbing on sheet metal, the roof denting going through automatic car washes.

The new Ranger looks very vanilla, IMO.

 

Its the same thing as buying a Bronco Sport or a Mustang Mach E …. You got a Maverick with a motor!

I do think the Colorados are good looking trucks- looks a lot like a Tacoma!

Can't trust a Chevy though... not anything new anyway

So glad Toyota going away from that. Put some edges on it. More like something that has been working out, rather than softie.

 

I had a choice….24 Ranger Raptor or 24 Tacoma Pro. Sat in both. Absolutely no comparison in the looks, feel and technology available. Pro all the way! I ended up with a 24 Pro, white with red camo interior. The looks I get driving it are close to my Gallardo.

 

No thanks to either due to a pathetic 5' foot bed, makes the "truck" into a mall crawler with a laundry basket in the back.

 

I wonder what guys with 8’ beds in HD trucks think of 6.6’ beds? Pathetic poser trucks?

 

You might be misreading the looks. Just today, my wife and I saw a new Pro and I pointed at it and said, look how ugly they made the new Tacoma. True story. She agreed, BTW.

 

Probably not since you can fit a dirt bike, mtn. bike, furniture, lumber, slide-in camper, average height person, etc in one. You know, a truck.

 

Had the opp at a Ranger Raptor or Trailhunter at MSRP, or a AT4X under MSRP. Ruled the AT4X out. After 18 years with Tacomas, made the switch and went with the RR. Interestingly, my first ever domestic branded vehicle and couldn't be happier thus far.

Sad to admit my old Taco no longer made me smile. It just felt like a reliable old tool that I knew would get me from A to B and back until the Earth collided into the Sun. Put away the nonsense e.g., YouTube videos, magazine reviews, bragging rights, worries about resale value, fanboy loyalties ... and can't go wrong with any of the choices as long as you pick one that makes YOU smile. Great choices is a win for everyone.

 

Can I ask why your ruled the AT4X out? I've been reading reviews online and it seems to come out on top over the RR in the articles I've seen. I have my name in for a TRD Pro, but I'm going to check out an AT4X AEV this weekend.

 

I picked up a Canyon AT4X a month ago, it is awesome!! I haven't driven my Tacoma at all since a I got it.

The DSSV shocks are impressive.

The interior/tech puts the Tacoma to shame.

I've bought my last Toyota.

 

Not to drag this thread off topic but I feel the Colorado/Canyon look better; the Ranger 2.7 and Raptor have better power solutions; and the Tacoma hybrid disappoints with its MPG. The only reason I would go with a Tacoma is for the 6-ft bed and (maybe) better reliability.

 

Nothing empirical. I wanted an AT4X in Celestial, and my buddy who was also swapping out his Taco happened to jump on a Colorado in Celestial. Had a mediocre feeling vibe with my local GMC dealer vs the Ford guys who were just great to deal with. Had more of a "this is it" feel with the RR and Taco interiors. My wife is a big Ford fan, so she also naturally liked the RR most. As dumb as it sounds, there was an F-It moment because the RR I got is essentially a twinsy to my 911. On paper at the 60K OTD price, the AT4X absolutely cannot be beat. Had my buddy gotten any sort of Ranger or Taco, I'd probably be driving an AT4X.

 

Still nuts we’re over 60k for a ranger/tacoma/colorado. You used to get a f250 for that money just a few years ago.

 

Re: prices, my friends and I have been taking a new philosophy to just take the good with bad and move on vs dwell.

Take the wins with the losses. Used to get a base Civic for $14K OTD but now they're almost $27K bare bones, gas used to be 99c/gal, stamps were 20c, eggs were always under 99c/dz, ribeyes were $6/lb everyday, etc.

Then again, we couldn't get the best of anything/everything at our fingertips due to no internet. Solid 86" TVs today are barely $1000. A solid daily user laptop today is under $1000. High-speed internet is cheaper than 28.8K dial up bundle priced to hell. Long distance phone bills, etc.

Off-topic, but it's helped us realize we're just getting older, so why not focus on having fun.
