This is the first truck that I have owned with a turbo. I don't have any clatter or noise that bothers me, but the hissing sound the turbo makes is something new to me. It really sets it apart from other vehicles, not to mention the power that the turbo gives that 4cyl motor. So far so good. I'm still getting used to the on board computer on the dash. It's a real learning curve for an old man, just trying to find my favorite radio station can be a pain.

Truck at first with early acceleration sounds like my 2005 WRX STi boxer engine.

I can't imagine why it would, the Subaru's unequal length header has a pretty unique sound. Clips I've heard of the 2.4T in the taco sound like any other equal length header turbo 4cyl

I totally agree about the over-the-top digital display and all of the different options you have to search through just to find the Trip Odometer! Like I give a rats a** what degree my truck is tilting left or right. If I find myself looking out the window and the trees are upside down then I'm going to very quickly realize I've been in a bad accident or been stupid and driven somewhere I didn't need to go. I drove a 98 Ford Ranger for 24 years and driving this thing was about as confusing as if I had climbed in the Space Shuttle and tried to fly it.
And NOW I'm learning it comes with FAKE ENGINE SOUNDS!

I'm old but still in a technology job. It was a bit funny that it took some learning. The manual is poor and it helps if you download the .pdf version and search within vs rely on a poor index. That you have some extra menus when using the steering wheel interface, and accessing them needs better documentation. At this point I quite like the way I have the 3 windows set but still miss the simple trip reset button most vehicles have had for so long.

The sounds are interesting. Tail pipe, engine physical sounds and the inside cab sounds all differ but we love the noise cancellation. It makes the vehicle pleasant to drive for it being a light truck and having AT type tires to start.

It also seems like I hear the turbo more now that I have 500+ miles on the odometer.

We tried so many vehicles in the past two years in addition to my occasional rent and fleet experience that I just cannot complain as many do. In February I had a hybrid Grand Cherokee for 2000 miles. IIRC that's more mature than these new eara Toyotas. Software/dash interface was more clunky, it had defroster problems, and the safety electronics had more false positives. I think the new Tacoma is pretty good.

Not only the trip reset button is missed, I wish the odometer had the 1/10th mile counter on the far right. Never realized how many times I'd use it to be able to tell someone the distance to a turn-off or how far past an intersection or landmark to travel. I'm pushing 68yrs old and all this technology and so many options can be more frustrating than helpful.

My Tacoma sounds more like my '02 WRX than my wife's Ascent. Figure that one out.

I tend to think it is just the top end of the engine and those port injectors. My logic for this...... High octane fuel didn't change it. The active noise cancelling seems to influence it. Doing some off road work with windows down and sitting in back the engine sounds consistent and in driver's seat I just hear less exhaust noise.

No. Still does it now at about 3500 miles. It's probably not any quieter, I just notice it less.

There's people in here saying they think the sound of the turbo is weird while I'm over here hoping somebody makes a blow off valve for it so I can get the stutututu...

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only person that thinks it sounds vaguely Subaru-unequal-header-ish. I'm having trouble finding any good pictures of the turbocharger and exhaust manifold, but I wonder if the two different exhaust paths for the twin-scroll turbo make the exhaust path somewhat unequal length and cause the "Subaru" noise.

First time I drove mine with the radio off my son and I looked at each other and he asked "hey dad, are you sure they didn't sell you a hilux on accident?", LOL. It really did sound like a diesel under the hood. I hope this is not indicative of an engine problem. I have only put 400 miles on it in the month I've owned it.

Does your truck get a louder rattling sound between 2000 and 3000 rpm first through 4 gear especially going uphill doesnt matter if I run 93 octane

I think mine does too. I’ve also noticed that the sound tends to go away if you do something that shifts it into the middle part of the map where it runs purely in port injection. I’m confident that the sound is mostly the high pressure injection pump, but also the direct injectors. I’ve been meaning to climb around the head with my mechanic’s stethoscope to confirm it, but I just haven’t been arsed as of yet.

Blame everyone just assuming you'll always be using GPS based navigation!

It only works until you forget the first time, and it certainly won't work for everyone, but my approach for this vehicle and my last one was to never reset "Trip B". so Trip A got reset each tank and Trip B never reset and always matched my ODO but with 1/10ths.
