Use to work in an ER, dude rolls in with that in a plastic bag in his pocket. Says they were chopping wood, figured they would sober up before coming in to see if we could put it back... told him not after that many hours. Sewed the end of the finger up sent them on their way, left that on the counter. So it's medical waste at that point. so pics were needed for science. of course. Not the only pic but definitely a favorite! with my nurse friends.

oh super clean cut, we could have likely attached it back to if they had come right in. when they said they cut their finger. I figured slap bandage on and send them away, as calm as they were, maybe a couple stitches, then from the pocket in the plastic bag hits the counter in front of the check in person. then i asked how long ago the finger was cut off... cant remember but hours they jsut decided to sleep off some of the drinking, and come in after.

this reminds me of an incident that happened at my work when I was in high school. but i have no gory pic...

I used to work at a print / frame shop at the mall, and we used to make frames cut to size for any print. the frame sides were all plastic in various colors (think 1987) when you wanted a miami vice lambo poster with a matching bright red frame, or black to match your Nagel print, or gold or wood grain frames for your parents' pictures..

Anyway, the frame pieces were stored on end in these tall, like 6' high, 8x8" carboard boxes that were cut down to like 4' and you would just grab whichever length pieces so you could try to maximize the useage....

I was grabbing a piece out which was wedged in tight with others, and as i forcefully lifted it out, i ran the back of my hand against a razor blade that someone had put into the side of the box as a "safe" way to shield the blade? Sliced my knuckle right open like yours, and i could see the white of the knuckle like a chicken bone.

iI washed it up as best i could and it was gushing blood, so i found some butterflies in the first aid kit and i butterflied it. it stopped bleeding and like 5-6 hours later, i was at my GF's house.

Her dad was a doctor and she kept insisting that I have him look at it, to tell me if i needed to go get stitches or not.

Eventually, I caved and we went to ask her dad for his professional opinion. He looks at my butterfly and says, i have to see underneath. Then he proceeds to pull open the already kind of sealed up would to get a good look and says, "nah- you don't need stitches! just put a new band-aid on it."

Sorry I didn’t see this earlier.

I’m a PA (physician assistant) in an emergency department here in Massachusetts. I do some work now in the field of addiction medicine too but the ED is typically the fun procedures.

I pulled the nail out of the finger in that case. Got another one the following week too which is weird haha.

I did something similar boning out a leg of lamb years ago.
I pulled the knife right into my finger
It wasn't nearly as bad at this and it took forever to heal.
A bunch of months later when my finger nail grew out it had a big dent in it going the same direction as the knife cut.

    This is from 2012.
I ate shit mountain biking and punched the ground with my face.

First pic is the ER. They put a clamp on my nose to stop the blood from coming out.

I had a zygomaxillary complex fracture - cheekbone is attached to the skull in 3 spots. I broke all 3 and rotated the broken part downward.
Also broke the orbital bone and upper jaw and broke my 5th metacarpal into 5 pieces on my left hand.

Some of the surgery was done through the eye socket but most was done through my mouth. I had a mouth full of stitches for awhile.
I had double vision after surgery for about 2 weeks. Do not recommend.

I got a decent concussion as well.

    broken face 1.jpg

    broken face 2.jpg

I ended up with 5 plates and 15 screws.
This x-ray is fairly recent from 2021.

The front dental implant was a separate incident where I hit myself in the face with a surfboard.

Yes! It likely saved my life.

A full face helmet would have saved my face.

I'm a firm believer in wearing helmets.

I fractured my skull when I was 12 by falling off a porch and smashing my head on a rock. I had a pretty good brain bleed and took a long time to recover. I don't remember any of this or about a year after.

Then I got into a head on collision in a car when I was 18...decently bad concussion. I don't remember the crash.

Then I raced mountain bikes for a long time and picked up 3 more concussions. These were all pretty mild except breaking my face. I don't remember the crash but do remember immediately after. Like I remember not knowing where I was despite riding there dozens of times and my friends asking me who the president is, what year is it and what's your boss's name so we can call him and not knowing any of those.

Then in 2018 I got t-boned by an out of control car on the highway at highway speed on my motorcycle. I flew 50 feet and landed on the back of my head and upper back. A lot of stuff was broken.
I spent a long time in ICU and had 4 brain hemorrhages. I don't remember the crash or the next few days. I have a vague memory of waking up in the hospital with a thing on my face (ventilator endotracheal tube and suction hose for 6 broken ribs and 3 lung punctures) and being told I was in an accident. I thought I was in my truck and my truck must have been totaled. I was super sad. Later I found out I was on my motorcycle and not my truck. What a relief!
I was wearing a full suit, boots, gloves and helmet so I had zero road rash. However, I question if I'd been wearing a better helmet if my brain would have been better protected. My replacement helmet is a much better helmet.
