I spray a little paint on the welds as soon as I'm done . Kind of powder coats them so the don't rust . Then I'll fully paint everything once I'm done . Might help you

 

Trying to paint as I go wherever possible. I fully prime and paint the bigger pieces, except the ends before I weld them in. I'm using weldable paint, but the primer isn't, so I try to spray welds that aren't going to see a lot of action right away. The problem areas are really the points where I will have future tubes converging. Pretty much just have to wire wheel it every day before the next tube comes in.

I just tried your trick. If i spray the weldable paint on a hot weld it makes a cartoon like "proof" sound and disappearsscared the shit out of me.

What's your go-to post weld paint that doesn't evaporate or bubble into a sticky mess? I can always paint over it with my top-coat.

 

Honestly I just use your standard flat black spray paint. Nothing fancy. Once I'm done welding I'll get it spray it and just keep on going

Just watched it . . Honestly I haven't done it yet but I'm planning on it . Dude definitely needs to get a winch tho lol . I figured I'd start it here since it looks like it's up in the Francis Marion in mtp and finish there as well just make a big loop lol . Was thinking I may try it in October when it's a lot cooler

I've hit around 250mi total mostly in the FM and also out near Greenwood and Greenville. It goes from calm to mud holes quick but it a ton of fun. Looks like you'd need a week or so to really enjoy it.

 

Yea that's what I'm figuring but I can take close to a week off if I need to . Id really like to hit the up state and the GA side . Seems like there's a little more to do

 

Looked like nothing in the leg he did wasn't equally doable in a stock Subaru. Hopefully the upstate is a bit more challenging.

If you check out the SCAR website it does get much better in the upstate (seems like everything is better up there!). Biggest issues we ever hit out on trails was mud holes, some of them are 2-3ft deep and soft. I'm 2WD and there was only ever 1 mud hole I couldn't do but all the 4WD guys sank past their doors in it too - think it was out on hellhole rd?

 

Sounds like you know your way around FM pretty well. Know of any spots in the forest that would be conducive to catching a bit of air? It'll be suspension tuning time for me pretty soon, and id much rather do that in the woods than by jumping the train tracks behind my neighborhood.

 

Jumping the hood tracks would be more entertaining!
