    Hey Fellas

    Feeling kinda overwhelmed!
I was rushing an engine oil change and drained my transmission instead! Should’ve been more aware… I know! I got up and did some things and let it drain then when I came back to put the plug in I realized what I did! It drained about 3.25 quarts. Went to O’Reillys and picked up some Dexron VI, it’s what was recommended. Put the same amount in and when I went to check the the fluid level by taking the over flow plug out, with the engine running, nothing came out. Filled it up some more and nothing. Did this a few times and still wasn’t getting any fluid coming out like it should, the slow stream or the drip, so I added more and nothing. While the engine was running i took the filler plug off and the over flow plug and started filling it until I finally got the fluid to come out and waited until I got the steady stream and then the drip. This put me at 4.5 quarts. Could I have been that low on transmission fluid that it needed that much before I finally got the fluid to start coming out? Took the truck for a test drive and it ran smooth with no problems. Is this the calm before the storm or should I be alright? Thanks for any help!

The transmission temperature is important. Suggest taking it to a professional mechanic.

Let the truck cool for a few hours since you drove it last and accomplish the fluid level check at the correct temp setting via the link that was posted in this thread.

It’s not uncommon for transmissions to be underfilled from the factory.

Use Valvoline Maxlife or Toyota WS ATF.

Dexron VI while similar is not for these transmissions.

May have been low from the factory, Transmission Fluid temp must be 95-115F with the engine running to check the level.
    Uses Toyota WS Fluid.

    Thanks guys!
I already did the drain and fill with the Dexron that they suggested. Think I’ll be alright?

If it says WS compliant. Probably Yes. I only use MaxLife.

Like stated, if its WS specd you are OK.... otherwise, you ABSOLUTELY need to do a fully drain, and push/flush of proper stuff to get the improper spec'd stuff out.

I'm glad you mentioned that, the good write up on here still does not have the correct temperature to check the trans fluid

Yea several of us have tried to get a mod to fix that or at least add the TSB since the OP of that thread is long gone but so far they have refused.
