I know that this has been brought up before so any advice would be appreciated. my 06 taco with a 6" pro comp lift is having alignment issues. I took it to firestone and they are able to get the caster and camber within limits, but they cant get the toe correct, basically they cant adjust the passenger side tie rod in far enough it is about three degrees in the negative. In order to get the toe correct they have to turn the steering wheel crooked and bring the driver side tie rod in, and i have a crooked steering wheel. So basically, my passenger outer tie rod is threaded as far as it can go onto the inner tie rod and the outer needs to go further in to get it right. Now when i took it there my wheel was straight but i know it was out of alignment cause my tires were worn on the inside. what i was thinking was could i cut the outer tie rod shorter so that i can turn it further in or is this a total bad idea? Anyone had these issues, and does anyone have there alignment specs for a 6 inch lift, that way i know where it needs to be. Maybe i've got some bad parts but nothing looks bent. thanks for the help guys

Remove your steering wheel and and turn it in the correct direction so that when you have it straight you can get the toe correct. the steering wheel is splined and can be rotated and put back on. DO NOT CUT YOUR TIE ROD.

You shouldnt have to remove the steering wheel to get it right although i know that it would help my situation. i just don't understand why the passenger side is adjusted so far in and the driver is the exact opposite. there has to be a reason that they have to turn the wheel to get the proper adjustments. right now my wheel is turned to about a 10 o'clock position and that is pretty annoying

You don't need to remove the steering wheel. First you need to make sure that you do not have any bad inner or outer tie-rod ends. If not, then you need to find an alignment tech that knows what the hell they are doing.

how do you tell if the inner tie rods are bad? The outer seemed to be good when we checked it the bearing was stiff so i assumed it was good, but im not sure about the inner, how is the inner tie rod secured on the inside of the rack. Is it possible that it came loose

Have you had your steering rack replaced by any chance? Have you visually checked to see if you have any threads left to adjust the toe? Check to make sure nothing is bent while you're under there.

The rack hasnt been replaced... I've looked under there and haven't seen anything obvious. The outer tie rod on the passenger side is adjusted all the way in. I don't really understand why one tie rod is adjusted all the way in and the other has plenty of adjustment

with the truck on the ground take a tape measure and measure the front tires from center tread of one side across to center tread of the other, do this on the front side of the tires, then do the same on the back side of the front tries making sure you measure from the same center tread to same center tread as you did on the front side. the front should be around 1/16"+ less than the back side measurement. toe in....something to check...

I know how to set the toe... But it can't be set in far enough without the wheel being turned extreme left there isn't enough adjustment to take out on the passenger side... I don't know why I don't have enough adjustment is the thing

How far off is the steering wheel? By extreme left do you mean about 90 degrees counter clockwise or more? If both tie ends are maxed out then your alignment tech needs to turn the steering wheel counter clockwise until centered and reset the toe.

Well with the steering wheel straight he was unable to get the passenger side wheel adjusted where it needed to be... The driver side was good but passenger side was off... So in order for me to be able o drive it we turned the wheel 90 degrees counter clockwise and took out adjustment out of the driver side tie rod... And this is where I am at now with a crooked steering wheel

Can you take a picture of both tie rods for me? I'll be able to tell you what's wrong that way.

    1. Set the toe and center the wheels
    2. Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack (single bolt -- really easy!)
    3. Center the steering wheel
    4. Reconnect the steering shaft to the rack

My steering rack jumped a tooth at one point and I had the exact same symptoms you're seeing. Re-centered everything and it's been fine ever since.

It appears that somehow there was no damage to the rack and pinion on my truck when it happened. I'm still stunned, but picked up a spare steering rack just in case it eventually goes out on me.

Good luck and let us know how you make out with this!

This is my current steering wheel config... the toe is adjusted with the wheel like this
    photo-6.jpg
Drivers side tie rod... Now this rod was adjusted in pretty far to compensate for the passenger side
    photo-7.jpg
here is the passenger side... there are no threads left meaning no more adjustment

basically what we did was turn the steering wheel until the P/S tire was within specs and brought the toe in on the driver side which had plenty of adjustment so that the truck will drive straight and wont eat the tires. Now if the wheel is straight and the D/s tire is in spec then the P/S tire needs to be adjusted in but it cannot be adjusted in cause there are no more threads left... If all that makes sense im not really sure how to explain it... hopefully you understand what I am saying...

I am not totally opposed to disconnecting the column and turning it, but I want to make sure i find a potential problem instead of masking it. I just dont really understand why this is happening

Is it just me or are they both awefully far in? Something just doesnt add up. Disconnecting at the rack and turning it is the same as removing the steering wheel and turning it.

Yep, except disconnecting stuff at the rack is 1 bolt and doesn't involve messing with the airbag or renting a steering wheel puller.
