24 Tacoma ruptured brake line?

Mud works in mysterious ways... Never know what you're going to run into or over. I did a lot off road (in my younger days), mostly 2 wheels (enduro trail riding) and 4 whl... The certainty is you're going find something or bury the vehicle. It could have been a root or branch that damages the lines.

 

Rear. Note that gen 4 switched back brakes from drum to disc so it’s a new assembly for the rear.

 

Maybe. On the other hand people have had issues with the rear drum assembly for years. Perhaps switching to a disc will make it more reliable in the long term.

 

No but the risks are substantially less. You're always risking having some sort of non-normal issues whenever you buy a vehicle.

 

I mean, there's a reason technology continues to evolve: solving issues in previous iterations.

Yep, and it's a floating caliper in the rear, which means there's an added short flex hose between the axle tube and brake caliper. (Previously the hard line plumbed directly to the wheel cylinder.) Still no reason to fail from dirt buildup. The dealer tech probably saw the dirt and gave a knee-jerk response about off-roading damage not covered under warranty, but failed to articulate it well.

Met with the mechanic the other day (parts took forever to come in). He showed me pix where mud buildup had caused the rear passenger line to rupture & it was near to breaking on the drivers side. The buildup was bad on the rear and not the front b/c the rear has the parking brake mechanism which didn’t allow accumulated dirt to fall off. He also told me rep from corporate flew up to look at the brake line & that he was told this has happened to several 24 tacomas. So expect a recall for a parts fix down the road!

 

Toyota. What do you think Stellantis woulda done? (That's rhetorical.)

 

Just checked the rear brake line my OR - not a good design. The brake line is routed inside the wheel and has approximately 3/4" clearance. Recipe for some bad mojo. The front is design different. Now it's bit clearer how the mud damaged the line.

Another concern - when servicing the brakes or rotating tires, sometime you miss the wheel studs trying to install the wheel and it lands on the dust shield or caliber. Imagine crushing the brake line... Be careful.

Well, that's a shitty design

 

My drum brakes don’t look so bad now JK looks like a piss poor design. I could see it potentially failing driving in deep snow as well.

 

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. My rear drums would literally freeze together every night in the winter when I lived in the midwest.

 

On second thought, I'm keeping my drums forever. This is horrendous.
