I’m not a fan of the AARP organization for many reasons. But a number of my old fart friends have the AARP supplemental medical insurance and are quite happy with it. They may not like AARP but they like the supplemental medical coverage.

They've got a decent magazine full of useful information. The crap I don't care about I ignore.

I agree the magazine has some interesting and good information. There are aspects of the organization I do not care for. I don’t know why but we haven’t paid for the magazine for years but it is still sent to us. I too like Rich went with AMAC. Just our personal preference.

I'm hearing you guys talking about buying insurance through AARP offers and wondering if you are getting something we don't. We've checked into it and found it more expensive for no better benefits than what we can get through a private insurance agent that only helped us sort through the options that were available. A "free" service paid by the government to assist people. We don't buy car insurance through them either, for the same reason.

We have Select Health. It's paid for my two ablations (80K paid by insurance each time) and my wife's two artificial knees ($280 co-pay per knee) and every three months we have the option to "buy" $150 worth of all kinds of mail-order medical products that are paid for as part of our insurance. We get so much from it that we buy for extended family. Everything from aspirin to BP readers to Band Aids to vitamins. So many products that we can't possibly need it all. All competitively priced compared to retail.

Guess I’m still too healthy to need much. Did buy some Advil for my toe when it really hurt. Go to the Chiropractor a dozen times a year.

I don’t personally have my supplemental plan thru aarp, I’m just passing on what my friends who have aarp coverage have said.
I am fortunate I have a plan through my former employer and they pay 60% of my premium so it costs me almost nothing. The plan is great , pays what Medicare doesn’t pay at usually 100%. Prescriptions are cheap mostly $10 or less. I feel myself fortunate to have the plan I do.

You are very fortunate, I’m retired, wife’s still working. The benefits she gets are a huge part of the equation, hundreds more a month once those are gone.

Yeah, I'm still working as well, I am planning on working at least until I'm 70 (less than three years from now), or until the end of the decade. All of this of course is my prostate cancer permitting.

I retired in AUG 2016 - company I worked for was closing its local office in Tucson and asked that I take over engineering office for their bigger gear shop in Tempe, AZ. Sort of moving from the oven to the fire...... I was closing in on 67 so I took the SS benefits and retirement annuity payments from a company I worked for when I began my career. Wife had a full time HR job at a local fire district, so economics were good - and we had already relocated from Wyoming to warm weather in 2001.
Retirement wasn't my cup of tea....... projects I thought I'd be able to pursue were constantly over-ridden by my Mrs list of "honey-do's". So after a bit of grumbling she told me if I didn't like it, to "get a job". I started at the nearest large intersection and applied for everything. Got hired by a machine shop to fill in for a jailed supervisor (he never came back, ran off to Mexico) and I've been there ever since - doing something or other. Managed to get down to 20 -25 hours a week, doing project planning and engineering repairs, keeping up a sketch file of jobs we do and so on. I hope to keep this up for a while longer - its handy to have welding and machining access when doing work on the Tacoma or T-Bird.

Was riding my scooter on the freeway, doing about 65-70, one summer, I could see a big ole bumble bee (those big black round ones) way out in front of me in my path. As I got closer and trying to avoid this thing, he hit my left arm and went up my sleeve. I felt it walking around my armpit. I signaled and pulled over to the shoulder, got off the bike, unzipped my jacket and got my right arm out and about then that little bastard stung me in my arm pit, twice.

Had a similar thing happen to me. My first vehicle was a Suzuki TS185 Enduro. Riding home from High School one day I thought I was cool riding with my full-face helmet visor open. I turned onto my street and a 25mph one of those big hairy bumble bees flew in my helmet! I locked it up, dumped the bike and ripped my helmet off. Fortunately he flew off without stinging me.

thought I was a tuff guy, my future wife (was workin on it), and I were scrolling down the interstate, it was hot as hell, i had my leather jacket zipped halfway down for ventilation...so all of a sudden, I started to get stung in my chest area, I pounded on my chest while yelling to her, to get ready for a VERY quick stop...got stopped and stripped off my jacket and watched a yeller jacket drop to the ground...

Ok One more story. My buddy who rides a Harley Heritage Softail was riding behind me, I was in my car, on our way to a work function. It was summer so he was wearing shorts. All of a sudden I see him make a panic stop and start jumping around like crazy. Turns out a honey bee flew up his shorts and stung him in the ummmm.. nether regions! I never laughed so hard in my life. He was drained! LOL

My motorcycle riding lasted about 3 minutes. I was 14 and riding a bike for the first time. It was a old Honda CB125? maybe... but anyhow as soon as I got used to riding it for a minute I had a wasp fly into my short sleeve shirt and I freaked as it was zapping me. So I drove the bike into the side of a shed. That was the beginning and end of riding anything larger than a scooter or mini-bike. Thankyouverymuch. :hattip::humble:

Since we are talking about stinging little bastards here’s my story. When I was 12 years old we had a yellow jacket colony residing in a hole in the ground in our back yard. My dad was going to destroy the nest in a day or two, but before that happened my friend and I thought it would be fun to throw rocks at their residence. We started throwing rocks and kept moving closer and closer until we made a direct hit. This apparently pissed them off. They came swarming out and made a “bee” line for us. Being the brighter and more athletic one I took off like a shot and ran to our back door that led into the kitchen. I took 5 direct hits from the barbarian bugs. I slammed the door and stood looking out the window . My friend being a little slow on the uptake stood staring at the swarm. He finally realized it was time to go.
He ran to the same back door as I. I could see his shirt was covered in yellow jackets. I decided it would be unwise to let in the house since at best I’d be letting several dozen of the little winged bastards of death in. I locked the door.
I yelled at him to roll on the ground and I would come out and start killing all I could. He apparently did not like my idea. He yelled at me that he was going to kick my ass. I gently reminded him that I was the bad ass and any ass kicking would be me kicking his. He decided it was time to take his leave and ran off yelling and screaming and using swear words I had seldom heard before.
That was the end of the friendship, we never spoke again. I learned a couple lessons that day. Never throw rocks at winged bastards of death and sometimes it good to have friends that are dim witted and slow or at least slower than me.

Hey now!!! I'm not 70 yet - don't make me older than I am!!! That has been discussed many times - no need for a 70+ thread, since this one is 60+ and last time I checked, 70 fits in the 60+ category!! :D
