Deciding between 2 completely different Tacomas

100% get the newer one. It is basically a new truck. Negotiate the price to 42k

You cannot add leather, carplay, heated seats, adaptive cruise control or a 360 degree camera later. The timing leak cover has mostly been fixed. Also firmware updates to the transmission were made after 2020.

 

How's the underbody look like in terms of rust? I'd go for the newer, nicer one.

 

Mostly true, except you can add some VERY nice Katzkin Leather seats these days. I did that with my 2nd gen years ago, and today there are even more options to choose from.

 

For reference I purchased a fully loaded 2023 tacoma trd offroad tech & premium pkg with 20k miles for 38,500 last week. There was a line of 5 people waiting to purchase it if I changed my mind.

 

What kind of lift is on the newer truck? Who installed the lift?

The only lift kit that I would consider adding value to a used truck is the OEM kit that was installed by a dealer. Aftermarket lifts installed by local mechanics don’t really add too much value on the secondary market. They might even detract from value.

As stated earlier, for $44K, you should be able to buy a brand new TRD Off Road. I think I paid less than that when I bought mine.

Then I'd negotiate down on that white one. Looks like a solid truck. Be ready for transmission hunting. Might add a tune for that.

 

I can agree with this too. I drove the 4th gen and 3rd gen back to back before finally deciding on a 3rd gen tacoma. Reliability, looks, turning radius and V6. No gear hunting for me either. Not sure if that was a sub 2020 issue or what..

 

Transmission hunting for the 17 or 22? or both?

 

You can add heated leather Katzkin seats and a CarPlay head unit for under $5k. Adaptive cruise control and a 360 degree camera aren’t worth $9,000 imo and he can get the ‘17 OTT tuned for $500 to help with the transmission and still come out on top.

 

The tunning and transmission stuff should be checked and cleared by the dealer before I buy right? It is a Toyota dealer.

 

The TRD grill, wheels/tires, LED headlights, adjustable heated seats and rack add another 3-4k.. I think the 2022 is an easy win here. OP needs to negotiate to 42k

 

Not sure. My 19 had it bad. Tune helped a lot

 

If you are going to get the 3rd gen, get the 3rd gen with all the bells and whistles.

 

Buy the new one

 

Only you can answer these questions:

1. Older, 414k less, but not a lot of miles, but a pretty basic, no frills version
2. New, also low miles, $14k more but lots of bells and whistles

Also ask yourself how long you plan to own it? If a long time, you might want to go for the newer.

Personally I have a 2021 DCLB with all the premium features. Bought MSRP for $45k and have done about $10k of upgrades in suspension and a topper/shell on the bed for camping, security of "stuff". I plan to drive it 15-20 years so to me it was worth it to get the extras.

 

The 2022 has 7K miles on it and is more modern than the 2017.
I'd spend the extra for the 2022. Non stock Addons usually do not affect price

 

No your driving experience will not be very different. They're both very low mileage. fwiw I bought my 2018 new and have put 110k on it.. it still feels "new-ish" and tight to me.

$14k is a lot of coin.. that's a tough decision even for someone that's been following along in the Tacomaworld 3rd gen forum since 2017. They're basically the same truck but 5 years newer w/safety gizmos and such is worth $X,XXX?!? (that's the difficult part of course.) I'd go newer if you KNOW you're going to keep it for 6+ years.

 

The 2022 seats alone are $14k better than those in the 2017. The 2022 is a nice truck, the 2017 is not -when compared to the 2022. My opinion is based on my experiences with both model years. I currently drive a pair of 22’s.

 

Agree. Those bells and whistles seem like a waste of money. Until you have them. And then they aren't a waste at all. They probably help retain a bit more of the resale value % as well.

And used even with low miles, he can easily negotiate some of that $44k down. We aren't in covid times anymore.
