Shop Time w/T.W. Friends

Well, here we are again with the drum brakes on the front - the wagon looks identical except the shoes are 3" wide - also used on police & taxi package cars.

Passenger cars used a 2-1/2" wide shoe.



The self adjuster cable was broken and floating around in the drum accompanied by a shing, shing, shing noise.

Speaking of the self adjuster - it was stuck due to lack-o-lube.



Well experienced people will tell you lubrication makes everything better.

A brake inspection calls for gently pulling the boots back on the wheel cylinders - it should be clean & dry.



... should be, would be & are don't mean the same thing BTW...

The cost & effort to fix or even upgrade the brakes is minor compared to the rest of this project.

On the positive I might evolve into a halfway decent welder by the time I'm done....

Here is something you don't see too often - most folks recognize the cap over the wheel bearing just like a trailer uses.

However

What is the little sheet metal dingus inside the cap?? These were commonplace in cars up through the 60's, not much later though.



If any of our regular Wrenchmen is to identify this I'm betting it will be @Tacoma Mike .

Static electricity diverter…
If it builds up and discharges it will from the hub to the axle shaft directly instead of through the bearing. It’s like striking a little arc welder resulting in premature bearing wear.

 

That's cheating - but correct.

I went to the local DMV office after work yesterday to get tags for 2 of our vehicles and they had a sign up “hours 8:30-1:00 due to staff problems”.
