Well friends, it was hot today. It's been hot all week and shows no signs of letting up. 90s and 100s. We tried to go to the lake today for some relief and to get outside. But the water wasn't even very cool haha:bananadead:

My daughter made the best of it and laid in the shallows trying to catch fish in her hands. The wife and I floated around nearby on our paddle board. But after about an hour we decided to go get ice cream and head for home, and the a/c. So, 2 peanut butter explosions and a brownie cyclone and we hit the road. I'm ready for winter so I can complain about the sub zero temps :anonymous:

Good morning and happy Sunday to all. Looks like that storm will pick up strength before it hist the big bend area...maybe a bit to the west. The color coding on the radar...BLOOD RED!!! it's barely a tropical storm.
Quick, everyone...go to the store and buy as much bread and bread related foods you can buy! The weather channel needs new B-roll of empty shelves!!!

Morning Ya'll....Been awhile since I posted the new property has kept us busy. Finally bought a tractor and now it's time to concentrate on where to build the new house.

Any soil engineers or septic system folks on here....? I don't want to spend the money to have actual soil test or perc test done without have a decent idea if the area would be approved. So as always I hit YouTube and watched about every video on the subject I could find. I dug 2 holes in different areas and I'm looking for opinions.

This land is in the northern 3rd of Alabama a few miles west of the AL/GA border. It's mostly bottom land with 2 different creeks.

The first hole is in an area that by looking at it you would think stays wet, but the dirt surprised me. Hole was dry even below 36". See video below.

    https://youtube.com/shorts/OeG-Gvg7yv8

The second hole is in an area with some large pine trees and sits about 2 feet higher than the first area. This hole had about 15" of rich top soil and then turned a lighter color which is usually an indication of a high water table but it looks like chert and was dry as a bone. It got harder the deeper I dug.

Not an expert but you pour water in and it see how long it takes to to drain off. Soil looks like it will absorb water real good.

Your local public health department is going to be in charge of that.

Yea....I have contacted them and they gave me a list of qualified companies in the area that can do the test. I'm just trying to get an idea before calling them out. The cost for the test and report that has to be turned into the health dept. goes up the more holes they have to dig. I didn't hit rock but the second hole did get pretty hard the deeper I dug.

Congrats on the land and the beginning process to build

If you haven’t seen some of the pics I posted here of the washouts from recent storms, hit the Search button, this thread only, then member PzTank. This’ll make them easier to find.

Both were small brooks/creeks that did tremendous damage during the remnants of Beryl.

When you’re developing your plan for the property, consider the absolute worst case scenario (100, 500 year floods from historical records) and see if you can mitigate as much as you can.

Do you have a thread for the project?

No thread but most of the stuff we have done so far is on YouTube. I need to convert our old karting website to homestead one, we haven't raced karts in over 10 years. I'll look up your thread and review. We are building outside of the 100 year floodplain, there isn't a 500 floodplain listed that I can find.

The pics are in this thread.

Related- Washout #2 update. Looks like they’re putting in a one lane temporary bridge :annoyed:

Another example of the state’s lack of commitment to the North Country… I’m remembering what the guy told me last week about the 2-3 year timeframe for a permanent fix.

Look at the creek/brook/steam. Remember this from when it first washout and the inadequate culvert the state had it going through:

I could use a couple of bridges on my place but that work is years down the road.

I had a chance to drop a Rise Armament RA-140 single stage 3.5 lb pull flat trigger in my AR and I'm really happy with it. I'm thinking about going flat in some of my other rifles.

I’ve never tried a flat but I’ve recently taken up palmetto state on the sale they’ve had on the Geissele SSA-E on both my AR-15-22 and my PSA JAKL. I liked it on both, way better than the stock trigger.

Looking at those pics, it doesn’t look like they’re going to help out the people with the partially washed out driveway…
