It's orange because of years of mud/clay etc

What it was first on there it did rattle against the skid plate, just a tiny bit. I shaved that down and despite the fact that it looks like it rattles now and touches, it's almost dead quiet.

Edit: note the super awesome custom heat shield

    Are you kidding?
    It's the 1st thing I noticed.
I see you kept it as close as you could to the skid xmember for protection. Like the stock route was.
Some of the routes I see get too exposed for my liking. Whether it'll "never get hit" or not.

Well.... The intention was for it to be slightly higher than that but.... Oh well. Works beautifully lol.

Get the exhaust hot enough, and that clay coating just becomes a poor man’s ceramikote. My clay coat from one of my first outings lasted a couple of years lol.
For what it’s worth, the 4runner is actually flattened from the factory behind the crossmember. I imagine it has different flow, but yeah, hard to say how much it would matter.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
The flatter portion is probably wider and still flows well enough. We're not talking high performance engines here.

    No. We aren't.
That's why saving every bit helps when you start losing bits here and there via bigger tires or added weight.

I would think flatter is better than lengthening and putting a full 90° in.

This would be a good conversation over some home skillet or a cup of Arbuckles 5w-30.

Fun morning with my daughter at the Winnman trails. She sure loves those jump trails…. Sorry for all the butt dials while riding (Dan for sure)!

While I like that, it sure is close to that black plastic actuator. That would bother me bigly.

Some of that in there too, from a different trip that ended up on some of the same trails as y'all

See the custom heat shield? Works wonders. Never had an issue.

I mean, while that heat shield looks quite inspired and was certainly the product of countless hours of engineering by a highly trained team of experts, repeatedly heating and cooling some items may shorten their useful lifespan by some unforeseen amount.

Unless you have a one-piece driveshaft, the front section doesn’t move when your suspension flexes. It stays stationary between the output shaft and carrier bearing.

This is how mine is, though not by my intentional doing. I gave my local “expert” muffler shop the option A of sneaking underneath the front like Tim’s, and option B of going back further than the actuator like that other picture. They decided I’m dumb and did option C like Timm except they left me no room to put a heat shield and my skids still don’t clear. It works and I haven’t had problems yet with the actuator but in my mind it isn’t a good setup and will be changed eventually.

Everyone forgets (or doesn’t know) that the pipe in the flat section is actually necked down from like 2” ID to 1.5” ID and has a double-wall construction to give some noise barrier. Once I saw that, it was clear we don’t need huge honkin’ exhaust on our trucks because they don’t breathe like a race car. Flattening an actual 2” pipe in place of the original section probably still moves more exhaust and isn’t anything to lose sleep over.

Hey I can’t remember all these things! But it’s easy to find out how much clearance you need. All it takes is a tape measure and drooping the rear suspension.
