I was thinking about what I wanted in a bike. I said light like the R3 but with more power and good handling. I wonder if I am describing the R7??? I will have to look into that. Amaris has a 2019 MT07 that I am sure she would let me ride to see if I like the engine power. Hhmmm

I was working for a dealership during that time period and we had one of those traded in. I took it home overnight and man that was a fun bike. Want to do a wheelie? Just roll on the throttle and hang on. No need to clutch up on one of those. Little too much forward lean seating for me. I'd broken my right wrist in 1995 and afterwards bikes like that just put too much pressure on my hands and wrists to ride them any length of time.

That's why my cbr1000rr isn't enjoyable to ride anymore. It's officially off of the insurance. Just kills my wrists now

The guy that rode to Vintage Motorcycle Days 2 weekends ago hit a deer back in late Fall and crashed. Broke several bones in his right wrist and required surgical repairs. He's ended up selling a couple of his bikes as he can no longer ride anything with low handlebars without pretty significant pain or discomfort. This is a guy who at one time road raced fro Moto Guzzi so he def knows how to ride and is a very skilled rider. Now that I've gotten older I can no longer ride my Buell any real distance comfortably. Arthritis in my lower back and hips.

The Modular helmets have real appeal. Particularly in super hot weather like we've had this year. Being able to pop the front at lights and get full air on your face. The ability to grab a swig at gas stops without de-bucketing...

I've got the AGV SportModular carbon, and have a lot of miles with it, so I speak from experience. Serious helmet. Tests well. But I do prefer the sleeker tighter fit and peace of mind of the R1.

I've had two deer strikes while caged over the years. I've been close enough to touch 'em two more times on the bike, and countless emergency brake maneuvers as they appeared ahead of me on the road. Knowing what I do from the car strikes, it scares the bejeezus out of me when I've had to avoid them on the bike. I see them on the road side on two lane roads by my house nearly daily. I ride the ctr line and have a constant eye on the treeline. It's exhausting. The yang the to the yin of the twisties.

Thanks! I'm a buy once cry once sorta person, so I picked this knowing it COULD be a forever bike. And with my short stature, it made sense.

can even do a rally kit to make it more like a big boy adventure bike once you feel you are slightly getting bored of it.

Since wife and I are getting into riding street, we each got a Shoei Neotec II, which is modular. Her first outing with it was her first class last friday. Was 95 degrees. She loved that it was so easy to open up for air and to drink. Way better than taking her full offroad helmet off, or trying to tilt her neck back to stick a water bottle up in there, lol.

It'll do more in stock form than most riders will ever need.

We'll see. Depends on what I end up doing with it. It's mainly another hobby my wife and I can do together. She is dead set on a Rebel 500 for her first bike (she likes a cruiser). We can haul them behind the truck and camper to get around locally, etc. Figure if we wanna do offroad we can take the SxS, ATV, or the Taco. I do have a couple friends that enjoy the BDRs, so I could set it up for that if they twisted my arm a lil, lol. Definitely needs a skid, though, before I try much of anything off pavement.

The fact i'm like 145 pounds helps. I have read a ton about people abusing this things around the world. Sounds like a very capable and reliable bike.

If you go for a skid check out T-Rex Racing. Made in the US and the welds are gorgeous. I bought the skid and bars from them, but learned I hate chain maintenance so never installed them.

Excellent 1st bike IMHO. And coming from the dirt, you're in good shape. You already got the brake/clutch/shift/go reflexes, now you just have to learn that you're sharing the road with thousands of distracted operators of 2 ton missles trying to kill you. You can focus on those issues and the weight/speed dynamics that don't come in to play on dirt. Sounds like you know all this. ride YOUR ride.

you're a lucky man. that's a recipe for a great lifetime of riding. props.

    ^^^ this is the way....

that is very true but if its a bike for life and find the urge for a bit more for it to do then why not right?
yup it all depends on the needs and what you want to do with the bike. give it time and you will figure that out.

the rebel is a nice bike (personally find it ugly lol) the gf also wants a rebel 500 for a street bike but is looking for a klx140rl for her first bike so we ran ride trails together if i get another dirtbike here soon.

I'm not a fan of the look of the rebel either, but if that gets her out there I'm sure not complaining. She's only really got ATV experience, and mainly automatic. I've gotten her out a few times on my dads 300ex quad (manual) and my sisters XR100 to give her some practice. She's definitely better than the 3 people in her kickstart class the other day. Apparently they asked if anyone knew where the rear brake was and a dude took three attempts to find it... his first guess was the passenger peg...

Glad she's doing well to start. I'm also glad the guy with no idea is doing it right and getting training! Too many think it's all easy and just buy a bike and go riding. Then they argue that counter steering doesn't work.

The Buell in my avatar has one deer strike to it's credit. I was only about 200-300 yards from home when it happened. I can tell you from experience it sucks.
