I had a short 8 hour day at work so I came home and got some good shop time. Used up the last of the Mesquite blanks and now I have about 20 crosses and a few logo medallions to sand.

I need some more blanks for the crosses and wanted a different species. So I found some 5/4 walnut scraps and resawed them.



Then ran them thru the planer to dimension at 3/8"

Then I did everyone's favorite chore and emptied the dust collector drum.
This is a good project to clean up the wood rack of scrap off cuts and shorts.

A jointer and a planer will fill a 30 gallon barrel pretty quickly.

I'm kind of jealous actually. My "Wood Shop" is tiny and with my limited time it would take me a year to fill that. Looking forward to retirement!

My daughter is in her last year of college so as soon as she is done, and taking care of her own finances, I am retiring. Unfortunately this is the second time it has been her last year of college!

 

I don't know where the manual disappeared to and the phone is frustratingly small to pdf on. I'll look tomorrow as there are screws in each corner.

Heavy ran last night. I got water in the shop. In came in in places it never has before. No damage, everything is off the floor. Fan is running to dry things up.

 

Can you send that rain this way? Maple trees are starting to turn due to the drought.

 

Installed! Next up is getting rid of that old dark coffee and end table.

 

Cut a few walnut crosses today.

So far species are oak, Mesquite, walnut, and a couple of box elder.

I removed the patterns from the logo medalions with acetone and then sanded them.

Applied one coat of wipe on blo to these. They look richer and feel nice in your hand after a day to soak in.

I tried a white pencil to trace the template but it didn't work so good. So just used a fine line black sharpie and I can see that good. I get 2 to 3 crosses per short walnut board.

Then I cut them apart on the bandsaw.

Only one entry hole needs to be drilled on the crosses.
Making progress.........I need to make a rack to put the items on when applying the blo and to let it dry. The few pieces I did where just a test to see how they would look. I like the rich warm look, even on the box elder with yellowed a bit.

 

I made a finishing rack so I could finish the crosses I have made so for.

I did just a few logos to see how they would look.

So I had this idea to turn the logos into refrigerator magnets. God some rare earth magnets from Amazon. Chose a brad point pit that would provide a press fit and used thick ca to glue them in.

It worked!

Then I went through my wood rack and pulled out some different species and planed them down to 3/8"

I wanted some more colors to give people a choice.
Species are paduk, bubinga, ash, box elder, and soft maple.

The planer makes long fluffy chips, so that stack of boards filled the dust collector drum again.

 

I’m in the process of trying to save a 1964 Lane dining room table. My parents bought it new shortly after my Dad graduated college. It went from dining room, to basement laundry table, to junk room project table. It was a mess.

It actually cleaned up way better than I thought it would, with all the veneer smooth and clean. I only have one section of veneer edge banding that was probably sanded through in the ‘80s when my Mom refinished it with a Formby’s kit. It’s only a few inches long on the bottom edge. I never noticed it until I started my project, so I’m thinking it will disappear with a little work.

Here’a my question…

What finish do you think will result in the “wet” color I’m getting with my damp rag?

I’ve refinished a few rifle stocks using Birchwood Casey Tru Oil. Some with stain, and some without. I’ve always been able to get things sorted out with samples in the barrel channel or under the butt plate. I’ve managed to keep the refinishing nearly imperceptible (to an untrained eye) by going really slowly and carefully, but the table makes me nervous.

What do you guys think? “Wet look” What I want…
Where I am now… Smooth (320) with no finish.

 

You could go with a blend of polyurethane, real tung oil, and mineral spirits. Equal parts of each, this is Sam Maloof's recipe. I also like boiled linseed oil, several coats until it stops absorbing it. Follow the blo with a beeswax and oil blend that will make kind of a paste. Start with a 4 to 1 ratio and adjust from there, of course the wax needs to be melted to mix it. I often add a little turpentine to the blo and wax blend as it makes it easier to apply, keeps the wax soft, and smells good. I like just the blo, wax and turpentine blend because it makes the wood look rich and warm and not plasticy.

 

I guess it takes a 94° day to be productive. Finally got the tires on the wheels on dad's bandsaw. Then I played around with it and found the dust collection is a little lacking. Future project.

Put a new dust port on dad's oscillating spindle sander. And figured out dust pick up for the router fence with 1.5" black plumbing pipe. I didn't glue it up so I could take it apart and store it in the router table.

Then it was time to make something. Found a use the Hickory. Former owners left a metal and wood outdoor side table that was in bad shape. I had already cleaned up and repainted the metal, then weekend midnight shifts during covid hit and it was benched. Until today. Cut the Hickory into 2 3/4" x 17" slats, hit them with a 1/4" round over and then the spindle sander. Still need to mark and drill mounting holes and make two cross members to keep it squared up. More pics as it progresses (and I don't forget to take some!)

 

I have an older delta version of that saw and I agree there is no dust collection, spews dust everywhere. But the saw works so good I just live with it. Someday I'll cut into the lower wheel cover and add a dust port. But I never think about it until I use it and then just suffer through it.
