Spot on. Used it 2 weeks ago on a trip. Great food was made. Mmm.

I agree, the propane versions are definitely easier. My buddy had that one and we were using all 4 burners to speed up dinner

I picked up some parts to fix my older stove, I feel like I just wasn't holding pressure like it's supposed to. Luckily there still parts available, and there's some comutys of people out there still refurbishing and collecting them.

I ended up running into a issue afterwards that was remedied buy expanding my leather pump cup.
I found a lightly ussed 424 for cheap. A little oil on the pump and it worked like a champ. This is probably the one I'll use for camping as it can run multiple fuels, my propane conversation fits just fine. I have a buyer for the larger one so it worked out in the end. Here's some pics of the new one 424 and a comparison to the larger 414.

I have a few hundred stoves of all types. Only 80 some lanterns. Getting older, getting out less and my feet bother me, the heat isn’t helping this summer.
Good info at Classic Camp Stoves or Coleman Collectors Forum.
A few of my smaller stoves.

I've got an old one that we use for boiling maple sap to make syrup in spring time. It gets lots of burn time (weeks) but we also use it for camping.

I run pump gasoline and clean the generator (spring winding tube and needle shaft) a couple of times each year. But it seems that the "regulator" action of the valve is non-functional.

The burners are either "on" or they are in trouble. There is very little control of the burner flame . Blackening of cooking pots is the usual result of trying to lessen the flame.

Do I need a new orifice? Or some service to the tank valve. It shuts off fine.

Can you see if the pricker wire pokes out of the genny tip when the valve is closed?

Affirmative ghost rider.... The needle is "straight enough" to clear debris. (it's job)

I'm wondering if the orifice is "worn". Or if it is "in the valve.

One would think the screw knob valve would account for something, but it acts like an "on off" valve until the very "final turn".

It's less Tacoma and more mod
I still have a bunch of these. They take Coleman white fuel which is basically kerosene. Super easy to test you just follow the instructions on the tank for how to prime it and light it. Takes a couple times to get used to the procedure but once you do it they're super reliable and they're pretty damn fuel efficient compared to propane, I actually think they're cheaper to operate they're just bulky

Correction! Coleman Fuel, Camp Fuel is not kerosene, it is white gas. Kero is a little oily.

clean as scotch bright can make it ;-)
I've sent a tube brush down the pipe as well, wire wheel the "generator winding".

Post clean, the generator coil is loose . (not so after 100 burn hours, it's hard to get the coil out)

Did you remove the pricker rod too then if you had the spring out?

Kero will burn, but you need to get the generator HOT before it will work.

Old tractors were once built with TVO fuel induction. Thermal vaporized oil.

Started on gasoline until the "hot plate" came to temp, then the fuel was switched to Kero.

I've done it with the coleman stove, but it's a pain! There is more heat in kero than there is in gasoline however.

Blackening of the pots, is there a yellow flame at this point? Soot sounds like a rich flame, maybe obstructions in the Bunsen from spider webs or mud dauber nests, they have to be physically removed as they restrict oxygen.

    of course.

One aspect has always puzzled me. The generator tube has two threaded ends. One end has an unthreaded section before the threads start. Which end goes where?

When first lighting, If the burners flood, the soot is lasting perhaps 10 minutes or more.
Once all the liqiud fuel burns out of the primary burner, the flame settles to an intense burn.
(very useful for boiling maple sap!) Not so good for camp cooking.

Flooding of the burner tube is another reason I question the valve.

I can assure that there are no insect or rodent parts in the assembly. BTDT. ;-)
