i need more power

i have a 2003 trd double cab tacoma with the 3.4 and 255/85s on it and live in the high country of colorado and i cant drive up any hill with out losing speed unless im revved up to 4000 rpms. what can i do for more power or should i regear? i rather get the power becdause its easier but im up for ideas

 

re gear or supercharge

 

headers! give a good boost in hp, supercharger (if you got deep pockets) and deck plate mod

 

short of adding a supercharger you won't make anymore HP. CAI, exhaust, ect, pretty much useless in gaining any real measureable power. Regearing is your best bet. A supercharger is way more costly less reliable for DD.

 

Doug Thorely short tube headers gave me a good boost. I never thought of regearing, I thought that was only recommended for bigger tires

 

Op has bigger tires and should seriously consider a regear before wasting money on headers that won't net him very much power. Not to say headers are a bad idea you just need priorities

 

I'm also here in Colorado, and LOVE my supercharger! It makes climbing mountain passes a breeze. My engine never works hard.

 

after doing 33's on my 3.4, I did new yukons, bearings and everything... that has been one of the best upgrades I have done... I was getting 14mpg around town and now I get 17mpg (and I like to let it open a good bit). It performs just like a stock truck, maybe a lil better... it's really quick on the take off.

 

regear to 4.56, or 4.88 if you don't do a lot of freeway.

 

i live at 9600 feet and do a fair amount of highway driving to moab, home to michigan, and to other ski areas but i also do a lot of wheeling so its a tough call, alove what gear ratio did you use? would deckplate, headers, a good muffler like super 44 and a tuner help?

 

probably less that 15hp gain haha

 

so what your saying is i should fuck the 3.4 and pull my supra motor out and put it in teh taco? haha

 

i have seen that done...been think of puttin my supra motor in my truck lol take a lot of work tho

 

4.56's put my truck back to stock mpg... i'm getting 17-18 mpg around town and i have gotten up to 21 hwy mpg (keeping it between 60-65 mph) plus i love having the get up and go...

I think..... if you're looking for more power you're in the wrong truck. V6's defiantely have a good amount of powers especially over the 4 cyl. But you're not going to get alot of power without supercharger/turbo. I feel like if you want more power you need to get into a different truck. These tacomas with the v6 have plenty of power, towing and hauling and pulling hills i feel is to much to ask for out of it. Don't get me wrong i love my truck (also have v6) but if i needed something other than being a DD and for 4 wheeling it would not be my first pic.
That said there are many things you can do to your truck to help it, but theres only so much you can get out of that motor

Yeah welcome to Colorado, right? When's the last time you tuned up? Don't know how long you've been in the high country, but the thin air simply sucks power from all vehicles, and the automatic doesn't help. Mostly because I don't have a desire to burn through a gallon of gas ever 5 miles by flooring it, I content myself just to drive 50mph over the high passes.

But 4000rpm really isn't that high at all .. I mean the truck can easily handle that kind of engine load for extended periods of time. Will a supercharger help? Maybe. But you still have to contend with the lack of oxygen up there.

 

i dont use the truck to tow or haul its just the driving over the 11,000 foot pass everyday it struggles and i would like to get better the 15 mpgs out of the v6
