IMG_20230608_181437678_HDR.jpg Ok, so after searching for a few hours I can't seem to find any threads on this topic.

The question is :what interior parts from different 1st gens swap out, and what don't.
We know Toyota did facelifts in 98 and 02.
My truck is a 98 base model and the donor truck is a 2002 SR5. I'm looking at swapping most of the interior into the 98. The question is, what does and what doesn't bolt up, example: the 02 has the grab handle on the A pillar. I know the 98 won't have the same mounting. Also, the 02 has map lights, my 98 does not, are the bolt holes there?

On this topic: the sun visors bolt on the same, but the end holder is off, the 98 is about 1/2 inch closer to the rearview mirror than the 2002.

Thanks in advance for everyone's knowledge on this matter. I figured I'd just ask these questions now, rather than have my daily apart and find out things don't line up from one truck to another.

My 99 has driver and passenger a-pillar grab handles as well as a passenger above the door grab handle. The holes will be there on the a-pillar to mount the handle, it will just depend on if they have the nuts welded to the backside. It's pretty easy to pull the a-pillar trim off to check. Keep in mind the 95-00 a-pillar trim covers above the door, but the 01-04 does not. This means you would need to swap all the plastics behind the seats to keep it looking OEM.

I have installed a sunglass holder with map lights from a 02 4runner. Yes all the holes are there. You will need to cut the headliner though.

The door panels swap over, however the speaker sizes and window switches are different.

Pretty much everything can swap over, especially if you have a donor. You may find some of the mounting nuts missing on your truck, but you could get a nutsert tool and install them. I use this one: https://amzn.to/3WTknCO

Got the full donor truck (frame rot, Michigan truck) for $500.
Yeah the nuts on the A pillar were my biggest question.
I see what you mean about the A pillar plastic and the headliner.
The other concern is the rear extended part. The 2002 has the little cubbies and the speakers look a little different.
Wondering about the mirror/ map lights. Wondering if I have a power connection under the headliner......IMG_20240808_173627650_HDR.jpg IMG_20240808_173720359_HDR.jpg

I wish my 04 had the grab handles above the doors. The ones on the A pillars are useless.

Be mindful of the functional differences between the trucks, especially with regards to the cabin wiring harness.

    - Your 1998 has mechanical/cable-actuated HVAC controls. The 2002 has electronic/servo-actuated controls.
    - It looks like the controls on the steering column are different.
    - Your 1998 has crank windows and manual locks. The 2002 has power windows and locks.
    - The 2002 has explosive pretensioners in the seatbelts and the 1998 does not, so you won't have the wiring to connect those properly. This also means the belt buckles/receivers are likely incompatible, so you can't mix seatbelt parts.
    - The airbags might require different wiring (total guess there, but I wouldn't be surprised).
    - There are probably a bunch of other small differences, for example the dash light dimmer, which is probably a rheostat (two-wire) in the 1998 and a potentiometer (3-wire) in the 2002.

I actually just installed one above the driver door in my 99. The holes were there and just just drilled them larger and installed nut inserts. I imagine they are there in 01-04, but you’d have to pull back the headliner to check.

    They’re not there.

I have a picture saved from here of someone’s headlinerless roof of an 01-04.

    Sucks.

I guess they redesigned the roof structure then. I wonder what else changed up there.

I swapped complete interiors a few years ago between my outgoing 2001 DC and incoming 2003 DC, including instrument panel.

Even on those same Gen 1.5 trucks there were some pieces that didn’t interchange.

    A few:
    1. The IP mounts to the lower windscreen opening with plastic pegs into plastic lined holes. The body and the big IP molding is the same, but the pegs and inserts are different and needs to be switched between the two.

    2. The 2003 v 2001 seat belts are different. The special wiring connects aren’t interchangeable.

    3. The b-pillar upper trims are different in small ways, but not interchangeable. This is double-cab specific, of course. I don’t know about trims on single cabs or access cabs.

    4. The 2001 driver side A-pillar doesn’t have a grab handle, but the threaded inserts are there and a later b-pillar grab handle and trim mount perfectly.

    5. Rear view mirror and lights are complex interchangeable between Gen 1.5 trucks.

    6. Steering wheel and passenger side airbags changed out between 2003 and 2001 straightforwardly. No connection or error code issues.

Good luck with your swap! Mine turned out great and my 2003 now has the charcoal color I like better and much better condition. Hopefully some of the things mentioned about my simpler swap might help your project.

Thanks for all the replies and support.
I did a little more looking yesterday, my 98 had the cruise control on the column, the 02 has it on the steering wheel, wondering if the wheels interchange.
I'm not worried about air bags, or explosive tensioners on the seat belts.
The dimmer was something I didn't know.
I did swap in the "useless clock" in yesterday. Works great.
I'll keep updating with what I find out.

I DO plan to swap in the power windows, power locks, power mirrors. I found the thread for that and am still waiting on a alarm system to control the keyless entry.
As far as I know my truck doesn't have a anti theft system (except for it being stick )

You'll probably need to swap the clock spring and maybe some of its supporting wiring. If you're lucky all the plugs will match.

The dimmer's just a little thing, but it's an example of the unexpected differences that crop up. The three-wire setup is "better" but it really only matters if you want to use LED lights in your dash. Use whichever your cab harness wants, or there's some info on converting two-wire to three-wire here on the forums.

Sounds like you have the dealer installed cruise and not the factory one.

Hmmmmmm. Maybe. It's a 98 base model. The cruise has never worked, but the plastic bracket that attached to the throttle was broken when I bought it. Cruise control was never a concern for me, but it would be nice to have it working for the other people that drive my truck on occasion.
I'll get a better pic in the morning
