CB radio Installation. I've got questions...

I just installed a Uniden Pro250XL. Having issues trying to give it POWER. You think it's as simple as 1-2-3. However, I can't seem to figure out the whole negative ground vs the positive ground and/or using the ignition switch as power. Are you guys even running a wire to the trucks battery? Advise! By the way, the instructions mentioned something about using a fuse block but have no idea what that is. Help!

 

I like the spot you chose but for me i would definately knee the hell out of that. i would have to go check how its wired just to make sure. Heres my location i chose.

 

amazingly enough my knee doesn't touch it. However, when my foot is taking the parking brake off, I did make contact with the back of it. Now, that I've been in and out of the truck the whole day, I'm already used to it. It should work out great there.

Heres where i have it resting along the back bench will find a way so that i doesnt get beat up when hitting bumps on the road, but i just take it and mount it right out side through the sliding door put it on top in the middle of the cab.

 

mounted in the rear passenger center cup holder

ran the cable under the brake light assembly rather than going through the sliding glass

 

so monkeyproof you keep your antenna on at all times right?

 

yes sir, it's mounted 24/7...

i never have any problems with it. i've had this one for almost 8 years now and was on my previous vehicle. the magnetic base is strong and has never blown off from high speeds, high winds or branches on the trail. and since its a magnetic mount i can easily dismount it and just let it rest sideways on the roof when going into a low ceiling parking structure or whatnot.[/quote]

 

Im looking for a PERMANENT mount BUT with a quick release of the antenna. I'm desperately looking for ideas. I think its tougher to do in a 2nd gen taco vs the 1st with the flat bumper.

 

mine is permanent, i can take off the actual "whip" only using a small allen key leaving the base still attached to the roof

 

You've got a black truck like Socalman22. Is that magnet leaving scratches on the finish of your paint?

 

if you slide the magnetic base yes it will i have proof on my roof the magnet is pretty strong.

 

My antenna is mounted one of my bed cleates. You might wanna use a fuse tap for your pwer.

WTH is a fuse tap? What do I need for that? Can you take a pic of the mount on your bed cleat? Any mods to make that work or was it an easy install? Is a fuse block the same as a fuse tap?

 

I checked out the info you sent Banshee. Very informative. Seems like I've got my work cut out for me. I do appreciate it though. A nice CB is only part of the equation. Now to see if I can do it.

this post has been informative i too am looking for mounts for a 2nd gen for the antenna i was thinking duals mounted in the bed rail.... they look cool IMO but is there a benefit?

 

I don't know about the permanent mount with a quick release antenna, but it wouldn't be very hard to put a quick release on the coax cable that runs to your antenna. A trip to your local electronics store (networking or computer electronics would probably be the best bet) a RJ style criming tool and your choice of whatever style male and female connectors you might have your problem solved. I would look at some TNC style connectors if you are serious about doing this kind of setup. This coupled with a magnetic mount, would probably kick ass. Other than the crimping tool, this would cost all of about 5 Bucks... You could even take the cable in and I'm sure they would install the connections for maybe 10 bucks (RJ crimpers are anywhere from 20 to 50 bucks).

 

For the record, I decided to go with the K40 Power Whip antenna and the K40 Magnet Mount. I'm under the impression I should be able to attach a "QUICK RELEASE" connector between the antenna and the mount for easy removal. Any idea if I can also add the "SPRING" above the connector in case I do hit an overhead object? As far as the cable from the mount to the CB radio... well that's another fork in the road. I'll head over to Circuit City first and talk to the installers about a fuse box/block and see what they can do to assist. I've got a store credit there so I'll try to use it.
