Trailhunter Front and Rear Skid Plates on Off Road

Just Installed the Trailhunter skids front and rear on my Tacoma 24 Off Road.

The installation was pretty straight forward once I figure out that I needed to remove the sway bar plate. The skids did not come with instructions but the rear plate did come with 4 screws.


Installation sequence:

1. Remove the 3 covers (11 bolts total)

2. Install the rear skid

As I had mentioned, the sway bar plate needed removal. It has this nipples that slide off after the bolts are removed.

Slid the rear plate into place, using the same holes the previous plate use and installed 4 bolts.

3. Installed the front plate.

There are videos out there on how to install the TH front plate so I won't bother with the details as it is pretty straight forward. The unknown factor for me was the sway bar plate and where those nipple thingys (Technical Term) were supposed to go. If you dont have a sway bar disconnect, I imagine you won't have the plate and this would be a none issue.

If anyone wants any of the plates, let me know, else they are going into the trash bin.

 

Did you get the TH rear differential skid also?

The Trailhunter plates are 1/8” steel? Wish the aluminum TRD plate was longer.

 

I did not because there is no picture of it and I dont know what it protects...

 

its the paper plates I took off, is that what you want? I am in San Diego.

 

I chose the steel because they are only about 6 pounds more for the steel front plate than the aluminum. The aluminum can not take much punishment....

 

Where are you getting these parts?

 

You get them from the dealer closest to you. They usually offer a 20%-33% off ... thats how I purchased mine..... order online and pick up from dealer.

 

Fyi I have a SR5 and was looking to replace the felt plate with at least the composite ones you guys are throwing away. Bought some take offs from a guy in Oregon unfortunately the front one is about 2" short, even though the bolt holes line up, not sure why.

 

I believe because you need the Front Frame Cross Member bar. The OR, TH, and TRD Pro have it. The rest of the trims dont but a couple of vendor shave them for sale, also Toyota (I think). They should run you about 70.00 USD. The NYTOP is way over priced.

39.00 is a no brainer... specially if you also plan to add the plates in the future.

They both have their positives and negatives. Unless you have a tourch, reshaping a steel plate is near impossible. Aluminum it's much easier. Also with Aluminum you don't have to worry as much about rust. Aluminum to steel will not rust like steel to steel contact. Unless you Absolutely send it hard, Aluminum is plenty of protection.

 

Here is a video from Independence Overland. It covers all 3 skid plates, and the one missing which is the gas tank. It does have the rear skid plate for the differential.

What is the difference between these Two-part numbers for front?

PT228-35241

 

One is the front skid plate and the other seems like a transmission skid plate for something else.
