powder coating vs. do it your self painting TRD OR rims

local place i just called said $80 a rim and it would take a week to do!!!
so i'm going to call more places monday and see what else they offer but should i do powder coating them gun metal grey like my truck or try and paint them myself gun metal?

money isn't much of an issue (although i rather not get bend over and screw by some dbag) its more of a time thing. i work 6 days a week and can't afford giving my rims to someone for a week, actually no more than a day turn around really. but how long would doing it my self be. me driving around with half ass paint job wouldn't be so great either. any advice guys?

 

self etching primer and a few coats of paint......give it a good day to dry and you'll be good to go. way easier touchups and cheaper too(i know you said money isnt an issue....but you cant touch up powdercoat).

be sure you prep them fully too.....clean them and make sure they are free of all contaminants.

 

i painted my running boards on my last tacoma and it came out pretty nice. should i do all my rims front and back? and what can i use to keep my truck up while i remove all the rims? sorry never taken all the wheel off at once on any car/truck i've ever owned.

 

I like self painted rims because you can always touch up yourself.

 

powder coating does not take a week to cool down. they are probably busy, and dont want to do your wheels. find another place.

 

oops my bad i forgot to add that. yea they said a week because they are busy but $80 per rim seems kinda high. anyway i think i'll just paint them myself for now and when i have more free time to powder coat them i will. i did my running boards before so it should be about the same. right? lol

 

yeah, like Tacomaman said, make sure they are fully cleaned.

 

You could buy some other off road wheels and have them powder coated. Someone is usually selling a set on here.

Might be easier than getting your tires taken off your wheels and having your truck on stands for a day. I found a set of steel wheel take offs and used those for a week while my wheels were being powder coated. I still had to get the tires taken off the wheels to drop them off at the place to be powder coated.
