Possible source of mod money 4U

Just an idea for those of you looking for some extra mod money. I've set myself up in the past as a vendor on Amazon.com. Every now and then I'll rummage through my books and sell some back. When you post something for sale, you'll show up in the listing of used/new for sale. They'll handle the transaction and collect the money for you when the buyer pays and send it to your bank account electronically (I'm not sure how often they send but it isn't instantaneous). They set the shipping price (for books $3.99 for media mail, $6.99 for priority). Their commission can be a little steep sometimes (~$2.99-$4.00) so make sure it's worth it to sell it (e.g. if you have a book that only sells for a penny, by the time you ship it, you'll have made about $0.50). The more popular the item, the faster it will sell. When a book is sold, you'll get an email from Amazon. Log into your account and print out a packing slip for the item. It'll contain the shipping address. They can go pretty fast. I've sold 4 books since last night that were just lying around collecting dust for about 6 months-1 year.

If you're going to sell books, search for the book by 10-digit ISBN number. That'll ensure you're selling under the right edition. You can see what it'll probably go for by examining the Used/New price of the other vendors. Then click the "Sell Yours" button. Be honest about the condition of the book. Also, always ship by USPS Media Mail for books unless they pay for expedited delivery. It's cheaper than Priority. I always use delivery confirmation too for the one time you get the "I didn't receive it" email from the buyer.

You can also sell any item Amazon itself sells (e.g. dash covers). Just make sure you list it under the correct item.

It doesn't hurt to check. It depends on the book. Some are always in demand. For example, I have a Design Patterns book by Gamma, Helm, Johnson & Vlissides printed in 2001 that will still fetch $25.

 

the only "books" i have are midget S&M magazines...

 

I don't think Amazon sells midget porn. I also don't know if anyone would want one that fell under the category "used"

It's not that much time. Takes about 20 seconds to list it and maybe a minute to print the invoice, pack the item and address the box/shipping envelope. I've sold 10 items for $116 after Amazon's commission since Friday evening when I listed the items. It's only amounted to about an hour of work including purchasing packing/shipping material (enough for the stuff that hasn't sold too) and a trip to the post office. If everything sells at or near my list price (I'm currently the low price on those items), I'll have made over $450 plus the $116 I've already made. I've got 20 items left, so about 20 minutes to pack plus any trips to the post office. Tomorrow I'll take 8 of the 10 items I've already sold to the post office to mail them off.

It depends on what you're selling. If your items are only worth 0.10, then yes it's not worth the time. The book I mentioned above, I listed after I posted it and it sold this morning for $23. It was less than a minute to do all of that including packing.

 

What about books that are out of print? Like the Time-Life sets? I've got oodles of those around here.

 

Look them up by ISBN (it can usually be found on the back or on the copyright page). Just type the number without dashes in their search box. As long as Amazon has an entry for it, you can list it. Amazon may list it even though it's not in print.

 

Since posting this, I've made enough money to get some CBI sliders for the truck with enough left over to have them welded on.
