Picked up my most recent Toyota- 2020 TRD OR in cement. Looking forward to modifying this one and hitting some trails in NC.

I have a long Toyota history, and long wheeling history coming from Colorado. Relocated to NC about 2 years ago and have been spending most of my time with street cars/track days. Looking forward to getting back out on some trails.

I’m located in Ashe county- if any other Ashe locals want to wheel or hit some driving roads, hit me up!

Enjoy some pics of the Tacoma, some street car things and my last 4runner

I have what i believe to be noise/vibration related to the needle bearing in front diff and thus I have ordered the ecgs bushing/install kit and axle seal. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for installers in sanford/southern pines/fayetteville NC area or driveable distance to have this installed. ECGS HQ is 1-2 months out and if able to have it installed before then that would be preferable. I have seen several videos for install and personally would prefer to have professional do the install vs doing it myself.

    thanks

Anyone know of some great car camping/ overlanding in WNC/ TN area?

I live in Raleigh and I'm debating getting a rooftop tent to make trips "out west" easier/cheaper/more fun, but I'm unsure of the rules, and don't see too many folks in the area with tents on their Tacoma's (or Subaru's).

I grew up going and working at a summer camp outside of Brevard, and I know of tons of backcountry camping all along the parkway, in Pisgah, etc., (I can practically navigate the area blind folded), but I don't remember ever coming across rooftop tent campgrounds/ overlanders.

Can you just set up your tent next to the road up by Black Balsam or Devil's Courthouse, for instance? Can you set up camp on a turn off down fire roads?

Any/all experienced advice would be helpful and appreciated.

Only place I know of is around Boone, Wilson Creek, Linville Gorge area. I get up that way every once in a while. Old NC105 is a nice little spot to camp.

Last time I was there, Linville Gorge was free camping. Free permit required for weekend.
Thats on the road that runs N/S on the west side of the gorge. I've only been there.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Yep, that is my backyard. I live on Winter Star Mt, a couple peaks off mt Mitchell.
Lots of good areas up in my neck of the woods, it just is on the other side of the mtn, accessible via HWY197.

My wife and I honeymooned at Winter Star Retreat (what it used to be called; it was the last cabin on the “road” going up what seemed like 100 switchbacks) back before it got sold the last time. Absolutely lovely area of the NC mountains. We did a lot of hiking up the mountain from the cabin to see the old mica mines. Very cool place!

That’s awesome! I pass by that cabin daily on my dirtbike heading to maintain those trails you’re talking about. It’s most certainly a special place for me…my gpa built a compound up here that I used to come to when I was a kid for vacations, no one ever lived here until I took over. It’s a remote area that you can still get into town fairly quickly.
This is the first time I have heard anyone that’s not from this area mention those mines. If your ever this way again, I started up a little adventure touring biz and a small campground. I take people out on SxSs and also teach dual sport motorcycle courses up here.
